My approach to teaching/tutoring is simple. 1) Make an assessment of the student’s needs. This is a critical part of the methodology. The assessment of needs is based upon the student’s own statement of his abilities as well as empirical evidence of his performance and capabilities. 2) Develop a plan and design goals to meet those needs. Explain to the student the plan and the goals of how we are going to meet his/her needs. 3) Assess performance and adjust the plan and goals as needed. 4) Throughout the process, keep in mind that both the tutor and the student should have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

I love being able to teach someone something new. I love learning, but have always been a visual learner, so whether I'm teaching someone how to read, or simply helping them improve their reading skills, I introduce visual aids.
