I believe in helping students learn chess in a straight-forward manner. I teach the importance of chess strategy using the 5 most important chess principles. This teaches the student to learn how to think in chess, make great moves, figure out what the opponent is trying to do and prevent them from doing it. I teach how to come up with and execute a plan, openings, tactics, king safety, and much much more.

My comments on tutoring Chess : I have been playing chess since my childhood and I am good at it. During my college, I was a finalist in a chess tournament that was conducted on Hogwarts day. I played on the quad with students as chess pieces dressed in corresponding ones. I won all the qualifying games and lost against my Mathematics professor in championship. In my college, it is a glory for my friends to win against me. I play random and strategic. My random play is such that the opponent cannot predict my moves. If the opponent is playing with strategy, I deploy my defense strategy as well as offense. My favorite piece in chess is knight.

I have advanced experience on tutoring high school students and college students in courses like PreCalculus, Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics, Combinatorics and Probability, Econometrics, Calculus I, Calculus II and Calculus III and MicroEconomics and MacroEconomics as well as International Economics. I have also worked as a teaching assistant at Oglethorpe University. While I was in university, I was consistently given excellent feedback. I was a high demand tutor in both Mathematics and Economics. Although, I only had four regular hours a week, I used to get more than seven hours of extra hours per week. Some of the reasons are I give students simple and real world examples to help them understand complex ... read more

My comments on tutoring Chess : I was taught chess at age four and have been playing ever since. I played throughout school but I have never competed outside of a school setting.

I like to formulate individual teaching styles based on my students. Not everyone learns the same and therefore I do not teach the same to each student. Sometimes students require my constant attention and encouragement. Other times taking a step back and explaining everything in depth and watching the student work is the best approach. No two students are alike therefore my teaching style is different for each student.
I have just finished law school. I grew up in Brazil as well as the United States which allowed me to become fluent in Portuguese as well as English without any accent. I enjoy computers and have learned many programs inside and out throughout my lifetime. Through college I took every computer class I could and even learned how to create a webpage using HTML formatting. I learned many skills as well to improve my chances of entering into Law School such as study ski ... read more

A commercial banker by trade, I currently teach two (2) classes on financial literacy skills to legal immigrant refugees from India, Burma, and Cuba. This volunteer work is offered through the Catholic Charities arm of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I started teaching these classes roughly six (6) months ago on a volunteer basis, and the classes have been very well received thus far. The first class is entitled "Introduction to Banking", and teaches the fundamentals of personal banking (how to open a checking account, how to write a check, etc.). The second class is focused on family budget planning. Each class is roughly 1.5 - 2 hours in length, depending on the number of questions asked by the students. In addition to the above, I have tutored a foreign immigrant from Turkey in pre-calculus and college-level English. I tutored this student on a volunteer basis for roughly two ... read more

I have always enjoyed teaching at any level. One of my strengths is to recognize the personality of the student and contour my style to that particular personality. In a class room setting, I would focus on a student that I feel is shy and afraid to speak. I would gently get them involved with simple questions to build their confidence so that others in the same realm would understand and overcome the fear associat ... read more

In my opinion my teaching would have to be considered unique. Usually I teach math in laymans terms and use analogie that students can relate to. Once the student understands the concepts I can then express the same ideas in the more rigorous mathematical terms. I also teach so that the student becomes active in his or her learning experience. I try to help the student to realize that math is not as difficult as it is made out to be. Over the course of my tutoring career I have employed a strategy of helping the student to understand more of the mechanics of mathematics and depend less on shortcuts that do not foster learning or, even worse, do not work. I would say that I have a great deal of patience and understanding. I realize that it is very unlikely that students will grasp the new concepts immediately, let alone several new concepts, and so repetition occurs often. Althoug ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The quality of education that I received has inspired me to give the same quality and better. Because my students bring a wealth of different knowledge and skills, I attempt to help them use that knowledge towards the topics learned. Students learn better when they are able to apply the course materials to their own lives experiences which empowers them to articulate ideas and process concepts that reflect understanding of the materials. My students have ownership of their learing and I support my students by providing encouragement as well as useful feedback on their assignments in a timely manner. I also value the diversity in my students' learning styles and I am committed to promote their knowledge development.

A Little Bit About Me...

Being a father to a 13 year old son, and having close friends with school age children, I have been able to teach some of my ways of doing math in subjects from simple math to algebra to geometry. I believe that there are more ways than one to complete and understand a math problem, and that if done correctly and it is easier to learn and remember, then that may be the way that student better understands that procedure.
As an accounting graduate and a college football player, I learned to have a good sense on how to study and hard work, both on and off the field. I had a great love for math throughout my schooling career and decided to go into accounting due to this. Even with a hectic schedule with football in college, I was still able to graduate exactly 2 weeks before 4 years with enough credits to be close to a finance degree as well. I took some graduate classes for my las ... read more

My teaching style is somewhat unorthodox. I try to use as many styles as possible. I create activities and different opportunities for my students to learn so that they can achieve. I am a motivator and I try to relate real life experiences so that my students will see the benefits of education. My ultimate goal is to become a teacher who is effective at teaching to every type of learning style.
Since choosing a career in education, I have been an enthused advocate, promoting opportunities for young people. I have gone as far as getting my Masters in Education Leadership. I also plan to get my PhD in the next couple of years. I have taken many workshops and trainings to become a more effective teacher.

I am comfortable and knowledgeable in most subjects including Math through grade 12 (not calculus), Social Studies, English grammar & vocabulary, composition, most general science areas and generally can jump in as needed to respond to the needs of the student.

I believe that paitience, discipline, and focus on the part of the student and the teacher/tutor results in consistant success as a students attempts to learn and achieve. Although I do feel that conventional methods of teaching are still effective, I also believe that implementing audio visual aids, as well as hands on learning are also productive teaching methods. Supplemented with the reward merit system, I have found these approaches to be successful. Every student has the ability to learn if someone is willing help them. Moreover, I am a firm believer that positive reinforcement is an essential part of the learning process. Any student who has confidence that they can learn and achieve will learn and achieve.

The last five years have seen me working in research and development roles, but teaching math and science has always been a dream of mine and it is time for a career change. Having earned BS and MS degrees in materials engineering, my technical education as well as my career have provided almost daily practice of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. I want to not just teach students something, but also show them how and why it is relevant and useful. Aside from my technical background, I am also a semi-professional jazz guitarist of 20 years experience. I have played with many groups of various genres of music over the years, but jazz has been my primary passion since high school and I currently play with a jazz quintet named Style Points.
As mentioned above, I want to demonstrate to students the real-world applications of scientific and mathematical principles. This will not only ... read more

For five years, I was professor of World Literature/English Composition at Clark Atlanta University. For two years, I taught Literature/Composition at North Atlanta High School. During this time, I developed a linguistically oriented method of teaching writing that allows students to appreciate and exploit the instructive correlations between the writing and reading processes. Equipped with such knowledge, students developed not only the skill, but also the confidence required for successful writing.
I use a differentiated instructional approach that is designed around the student's particular needs. After assessing the students needs and setting targeted goals, I develop a (lesson) plan to meet those targets.
