A Little Bit About Me...

I have been playing chess for 26 years and teaching chess for over 10 years now. I've played in several competitive tournaments and placed very well in most of them including 1st place in the Magic City Classic Reserve Section and I placed 2nd in the 41st Annual World open 1400 section. I also have a lot of experience teaching people from beginner level all the way up to strong tournament players. I know of all the best chess training materials around and I use the best from all of it when I'm teaching someone.
I believe in helping students learn chess in a straight-forward manner. I teach the importance of chess strategy using the 5 most important chess principles. This teaches the student to learn how to think in chess, make great moves, figure out what the opponent is trying to do and prevent them from doing it. I teach how to come up with and execute a plan, openings, tactics, ... read more

My comments on tutoring Chess : I have been playing chess since my childhood and I am good at it. During my college, I was a finalist in a chess tournament that was conducted on Hogwarts day. I played on the quad with students as chess pieces dressed in corresponding ones. I won all the qualifying games and lost against my Mathematics professor in championship. In my college, it is a glory for my friends to win against me. I play random and strategic. My random play is such that the opponent cannot predict my moves. If the opponent is playing with strategy, I deploy my defense strategy as well as offense. My favorite piece in chess is knight.

Holding a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics and Economics, I have knowledge of both Mathematics and its application to Economics as well as other real world situations. I have advanced experience on tutoring high school students and college students in courses like PreCalculus, Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics, Combinatorics and Probability, Econometrics, Calculus I, Calculus II and Calculus III and MicroEconomics and MacroEconomics as well as International Economics. I have also worked as a teaching assistant at Oglethorpe University. While I was in university, I was consistently given excellent feedback. I was a high demand tutor in both Mathematics and Economics. Although, I only had four regular hours a week, I used to get more than seven hours of extra hours per week. Some of the reasons are I give students simple and real world examples to help them understand complex ... read more

My comments on tutoring Chess : I was taught chess at age four and have been playing ever since. I played throughout school but I have never competed outside of a school setting.

I like to formulate individual teaching styles based on my students. Not everyone learns the same and therefore I do not teach the same to each student. Sometimes students require my constant attention and encouragement. Other times taking a step back and explaining everything in depth and watching the student work is the best approach. No two students are alike therefore my teaching style is different for each student.
I have just finished law school. I grew up in Brazil as well as the United States which allowed me to become fluent in Portuguese as well as English without any accent. I believe that science has a undeserved reputation for difficulty as a subject that is directly related to the inability of many teachers to "break it down". Science can seem to be like a foreign language to the uninitiated, but at its essence science is simply a way of thinking about the world and asking questions. Several themes appear again and again in concepts that on the surface may seem unrelated and it is recognizing these themes that is the key to success in building knowledge and confidence. My teaching philosophy is to point out these common threads binding various topics in science and relate it to the real world as quickly as possible, always with the goal of breaking it down to its simplest explanation.

My teaching style is conversational and generally straightforward. I work through translators, so it is important to keep a positive presentation style to avoid misinterpretation and miscommunication. After each segment, I ask the students if they have any questions or concerns. The students are also invited to stop me at any time to ask me questions. I also like to provide visual demonstrations on a white board, which helps me to explain my point in further detail. I provide all my students with my Powerpoint presentation translated into the Bhutanese and Burmese language so that the students have a guide for future reference. My goal is to help the students to understand the U.S. banking system in general, and to overcome any fears or hesitations that they may have about opening a checking account. I teach them how to write a check, and keep a check register. So far, th ... read more

I have always enjoyed teaching at any level. One of my strengths is to recognize the personality of the student and contour my style to that particular personality. In a class room setting, I would focus on a student that I feel is shy and afraid to speak. I would gently get them involved with simple questions to build their confidence so that others in the same realm would understand and overcome the fear associat ... read more

Being a father to a 13 year old son, and having close friends with school age children, I have been able to teach some of my ways of doing math in subjects from simple math to algebra to geometry. I believe that there are more ways than one to complete and understand a math problem, and that if done correctly and it is easier to learn and remember, then that may be the way that student better understands that procedure.
As an accounting graduate and a college football player, I learned to have a good sense on how to study and hard work, both on and off the field. I had a great love for math throughout my schooling career and decided to go into accounting due to this. Even with a hectic schedule with football in college, I was still able to graduate exactly 2 weeks before 4 years with enough credits to be close to a finance degree as well. I took some graduate classes for my las ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For me, teaching began in my senior year of high school, where I would lead extensive calculus groups. After entering college, where I obtained a Batchelors degree in Applied Mathematics, I tutored pre-calculus and differential equations. I then began to tutor math to at-risk high school students. For a period of more than 2 years I taught computer-related subjects, particularly those that would enable students to obtain Microsoft certifications. Currently I teach and tutor all school mathematics subjects as well as SAT math.
In my opinion my teaching would have to be considered unique. Usually I teach math in laymans terms and use analogie that students can relate to. Once the student understands the concepts I can then express the same ideas in the more rigorous mathematical terms. I also teach so that the student becomes active in his or her learning experience. I try to ... read more

My teaching style is somewhat unorthodox. I try to use as many styles as possible. I create activities and different opportunities for my students to learn so that they can achieve. I am a motivator and I try to relate real life experiences so that my students will see the benefits of education. My ultimate goal is to become a teacher who is effective at teaching to every type of learning style.

I also plan to get my PhD in the next couple of years. I have taken many workshops and trainings to become a more effective teacher.

The quality of education that I received has inspired me to give the same quality and better. Because my students bring a wealth of different knowledge and skills, I attempt to help them use that knowledge towards the topics learned. Students learn better when they are able to apply the course materials to their own lives experiences which empowers them to articulate ideas and process concepts that reflect understanding of the materials. My students have ownership of their learing and I support my students by providing encouragement as well as useful feedback on their assignments in a timely manner. Having worked with aspiring GED students for the last 2 years I have real experience with a varied student base. From my experience I realize that every student learns at a different pace. The tutor has to adapt their approach to suit the students needs. The first step is always getting their attention. I connect with the students and try to understand what motivates them. I encourage creativity and positive learning and life behaviors. I have a natural talent for reaching students of all ages. As a substitute teacher, I experience all types of students. One thing is common in all of them; they want to know they matter. I use this as a means to find a particular interest and weave it into the lessons. Once the interest is peaked, engagement will follow. I love to see students when they discover the ‘aha’ moments in their learning. Not all students learn at the same pace, so I am patient and encouraging. My goal is to get them to believe they can achieve anything and go for it.
My first experience as a tutor happened my second year in college. She was an elementary student with behavioral problems. After four sessions, I resigned from that position. A month later, I found out that she was autistic. She taught me a very valuable lesson. Before I can tutor, I must first understand what kind of learner the student is. Although, I did not pursue a teaching degree, I have tak ... read more
