A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children and have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the fourth grade. My favorite part about teaching is when I see the "light bulb" go on in a child's mind and there is excitement about learning. I think every child can learn and that children need structure and guidance in the learning process. What I have discovered about myself is that I learn differently from other people. I am the kind of person who prefers to set aside that assembly instruction manual and put together that Christmas toy by laying out the pieces in an orderly fashion. There is so much pleasure in problem solving. I learn by asking myself questions. I have little patience for mundane drills and memorization if they can be avoided. Each child is different. It is meaningless to say that a child is intelligent. There are many kinds of intelligences. Some children are more intelligent in memorization. Others are intelligent in solving problems. While substitute teaching various subjects, I discovered my hidden talent – making math understandable for youth. My other gifts include excellent grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I don’t have a teacher’s certificate, however, and am currently choosing not to substitute, but I miss the personal interaction with students who want to learn.
Giving a student the answer does not facilitate their learning. My style of tutoring and teaching is to reinforce the basics, ask leading questions and give examples that assist the student discover the correct answers for him or herself.
