My comments on tutoring Statistics : Especially experienced explaining basic statistical concepts to students who typically struggle with math.

During undergraduate, I tutored several of my classmates in different chemistry and math courses. Additionally, I've had the pleasure of being a teaching assistant for 2 years for undergraduate statistics. As a TA, I was responsible for summarizing new material, reviewing the concepts, and going over the homework for groups of 20 to 30 students. I've also had a good amount of experience working with smaller groups of students or 1-on-1 with students who came to my office hours.
Patient and encouraging. I usually like to summarize the material and give a bit of context and work through an example. Then, I like to have the student work out an example independently and we go over it. While going over it, I asked them to explain the steps and their thought process. Generally, I like to ask the student(s) lots of questions so that I can see that they know what they're doing and w ... read more

Mathematics Tutor in Multiple Areas

I have been a Teacher/Coach for the past 4 years, and a Tutor for the past 6 years. I am well versed in all areas of Mathematics, and along with that Problem Solving, and Test Taking. I have taught at the High School Level from 2008-2011, and for the past year, I have taught both High School and College, as well as Tutor Students from Elementary School to College.
When explaining the aspects of a particular subject, especially Mathematics, I break down the work into its simplest form, and from there, build up to more complex components. With a foundation of Problem Solving, anything in Math is able to be understood.

I understand that math can sometimes be a very ambiguous subject for many people. For instance, a lot of times it just looks like things can magically happen without a very good underlying explanation, and to overcome that I try to really break things down and pull things apart, sometimes with real life examples, physical examples and even just showing the student exactly where the "magic" part is coming from. My tutoring experience has helped me to realize that not all students understand things the same way so it is inherent that you can teach using different methods especially when it comes to subjects like math.
I have a bachelors degree in mathematics which I just recently completed in May of 2015 from Binghamton University. I tutored at the university for 2 years in trigonometry and calculus 1. The list of math topics that my major covered are as follows: Calculus 1, 2 & 3, L ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my years at undergraduate study I tutored mathematics and physics even though most were graduate students. At the same college I was also a laboratory assistant for College Chemistry 1 and 2. A good portion of my other position was working at the Drake Memorial library where I assisted both student and teachers with finding resource materials. At the Worldlife Institute Education center at Waterport, NY I was a voluntary teacher for high school students. In working in the heating and air conditioning industry my experience in teaching has enabled me in training fellow technicians and mentoring new recruits and employees.
I have a rare gift of being able to impart practical examples of academic principles. In one experience with a former student I explained calculus in a way that she could relate the rate of change to a physical experience in a way that it came alive. When ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored for the Sylvan Learning Center in 2010. I tutored all math subjects K-12 and occasionally science. I was most successful teaching High School Physics. I also tutored some kids privately on the side before Sylvan, in 2009 and early 2010. I worked for WordsandNumbers in Baltimore MD right after graduating, in late 2005. I assisted with editing K-12 math educational materials.
I like to explain the concept while drawing pictures or showing some example problems, then have them work through some problems. I'll explain more thoroughly reiterating some key points after the initial exposure, and then try to pick out weaknesses while watching the problem set progress and work on those weak points. I like to encourage the student by pointing out the things they are excelling at.

My underlying belief and philosophy is that all students can learn, and should be allowed to do so in the environment that best suits their own particular learning style. I have a vast knowledge of teaching and learning, and a strong sense of what good teaching looks like. I have developed my own easy going, student centered, and hands-on approach to teaching, and design lessons that answer the inevitable question from students, “When am I ever going to use this stuff?” This simple question drives me as I plan and carry out these lessons, and allows students to actually use what they are learning in the context of real life situations and settings.
In my 23 years as a teacher and administrator, I have been involved in all aspects and levels of education including teaching all grades K-12, instructional and curriculum leadership, professional development, building management, comm ... read more
