During my tenure at Buffalo State College, I volunteered at the Equal Opportunity Program, where my main strength was utilized by actively tutoring students in the art of the english essay. I was able to tutor these students and advise them in the general format of the essay. We began by procurring a general introduction, or a statement of fact,followed by the body of the essay, descriptive references, and tying it all together with a summary that proves the point that you have set out to make. I tutored many different students, but it was apparent that most students who excelled in math and science, struggled with English writing requirements.

I have taught students in grades 1--5 as a substitute teacher in the Rochester, NY public school system and full time as a teacher of 9th and 10th grade English (one semester) and 7th grade Science (one semester) in a private school. In addition, I have developed curriculum and instructed groups of adult learners in the areas of grant-writing, customer service, software use, and business communications. Since 1996, as a freelance writer and editor, I have worked for a national law firm, graduate students preparing their doctoral dissertations, and non-fiction writers of articles and book length material.

Florida Writes is an assessment of writing proficiency which incorporates the assessment of higher order skills, since students are required to generate and develop the ideas that form the basis for their written responses. Looking for help? Select a tutor today. Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive).
