Through the Teaching Academy I was in I learned all of the different the different teaching styles and how to teach them. I personally like the student to have structure but I understand they are young and need a little patience and time and with help and practice they will get it! Its just a matter of finding what works best for them and doing it.

I love helping people, particularly children, reach their full potential by becoming life-long learners. Whenever I meet with a student, whether it be one-on-oe or in the classroom, I strive to identify his/her learning style and to create a connection to the lesson to his/her future experiences in the world beyond the classroom. Although I have not formally been in the classroom since 1998, I regularly tutor my own children. While in college at MTSU, I was a substitute teacher in Rutherford County for 3 years, mainly substituting at Central Middle School. I also did various volunteer tutoring in the Elementary schools as class credit toward my degree. Due to having my oldest child my senior year of college, I was forced into the general workforce due to finances, and do not have any formal teaching experience outside of substituting. A Chinese proverb states tell me and I'll forget, teach me and I'll remember, involve me and I'll learn. My goal is to involve students in their learning. In my classroom I have a variety of learning centers where students practice the skills that they have learned. Centers are designed for multiple learning levels and interests.
I have taught kindergarten for one year and pre-kindergarten for two years. As a kindergarten teacher my DIBELS scores were the highest at the mid year assessment compared to the other two kindergarten classes. I love to help children understand a subject better. It is a great feeling to see a student get the idea after being helped. I believe that every student is capable of learning; it all depends on their learning style. In my masters program and while I have been teaching, I have learned many ways to get students engaged in the material they are learning. Some students learn better with one on one and some do better with group work. You just have to try different approaches until you see which one works best. Sometimes it just depends on what is being taught. If you show interest in the student he/she will show more interest in your class or subject area and do better.
