Turning your weakness into your strength

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"

SAT - Math is one of my top subjects!

After graduating from an Ivy League college, I obtained my Master's Degree in Computer Science while working as a professional software developer. I also taught AP Computer Science for 2 years at an elite private school. I am an excellent standardized test taker (SAT, ACT, Praxis) and can share many test taking tips and strategies that have helped students improve their scores. I managed software development activities and projects at various software companies. I an excellent at explaining difficult concepts and helping people make sense of things.
I am patient, but have high expectations. I think most people don't really know what they are capable of achieving.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching experience/background began in 1976 when I enrolled in the Teacher Corps-Peace Corps program at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX where I pursued a masters degree in secondary education (math). The program included university course work at Texas Southern University, student teaching at a local high school in Houston, and a two-year overseas commitment as a Peace Corps Volunteer teacher. I completed all of the requirements except returning to Texas Southern to complete the remaining course for my degree. From about 2003 to the present, I have tutored students in English as a second language and mathematics.

I received my undergraduate Bachelor's degree from Wake Forest in 2006 in Religion and Political Science. I worked at Sloan Academics for one year in Winston-Salem as a academic tutor for a 6th-grade girl in all subjects. In January of 2009 I started the Master's Education program at Salem College to gain both a license as well as a Master's to teach secondary Mathematics. I have taken several Math classes at Salem to be able to teach (Calculus I, II, and IV, Linear Algebra), as well as successfully tutored a Wake Forest student in Calculus I in the Fall of 2009. I am a disciplinarian. I have an excellent ability to gain a students attention, keep it and the results of my students have been well above average. I have a knack to bring into the classroom, outside events (latest ball games, Olympics, etc.) to establish a 'bond' between myself and the student. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is to first teach the basic principles and then teach how they can be extended and used to solve problems. By helping students understand the fundamentals and problem solving techniques, they are able to think for themselves. This allows them to think more independently and solve a wider variety of problems without relying on memorization.
I have experience in engineering which includes a solid understanding of math, calculus, statistics as well as physics. I have applied and practiced these skills in various business industries over my 12 year working career. I also have experience teaching at the under graduate level for the Measurement and Instrumentation course in the engineering program at Iowa State University.
