I have taught in the public school systems for 40+ years. I retired when I hit the rule of 90, but found that I missed the kids. I then substitute taught in grades k - 12 for another 8 years to keep in contact with my profession.
I just start where the questions are and help guide them to where they can find the answers. There is no better feeling than the feeling you get when a student has that light bulb go off and they finally catch on to a concept. I have an excellent background in all subjects and I have also worked in the construction industry. Therefore I am able to explain where this knowledge will be of value to the student in the future.

When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way. I am three semesters away from completing two degrees, BS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as BS Chemistry, at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.
