My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuable experience teaching in a variety of classrooms. For one semester, I taught in a junior high life-skills classroom where we practiced daily living skills and went out into the community so the students could practice skills such as locating items in a store, paying with money, and crossing the street. Then I spent my Fieldbase semester at two different schools. The first one was 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. I have wanted to be a teacher all my life. I love working with children and teaching. I believe that children are the future and should be given the opportunity to do well and succeed in school. I like to do my best to teach students how to do something and then let them discover and practice how to do it for themselves on their own. I feel that providing good instruction and then being there to assist when needed is the best way for students to learn. I also understand that all students learn differently, so I would include the student in determining what strategies work best for him or her.

The classroom and hands-on experience gave me the knowledge and experience needed to face the demands of educators today. During the last four years, I worked mostly with adult learners, but a few high school students. I worked mostly in corporate training and development, but the high school students afforded me the opportunity to tutor in research, reading comprehension and composition.
