A Little Bit About Me...

Mathematics is a field that extends beyond a series of procedures as it taught far too widely these days. My stress is on conceptual understanding, as it is the key to understanding the subject. Even moreso than the procedures that we have been accustomed to viewing as being the core of Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, conceputal underpinnings are what the make the subject meaningful.
I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. I recently graduated the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in Secondary Math Eduation. I just completed my semester of internship in high school mathematics. My position was as a long-term sub, which means that I was in full control of my students and my classroom without another teacher. Basically acting as a teacher while also doing my internship. During my undergraduate work I was a teacher’s assistant (T.A.) for two years. As a T.A. it was my job to run physics for other undergraduates. This included both the calculus based physics and non-calculus based physics. I also worked with an elementary teacher as part of an outreach program to bring science into the class room. Two times a week I would travel to the class room and teach the kids (4th graders) science. Having a BS is physics gives me a great foundation in math.
