I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. A Little Bit About Me...

Mathematics is a field that extends beyond a series of procedures as it taught far too widely these days. My stress is on conceptual understanding, as it is the key to understanding the subject. Even moreso than the procedures that we have been accustomed to viewing as being the core of Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, conceputal underpinnings are what the make the subject meaningful.
I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. I have both tutored and taught the subject in the past, and have test scores that demonstrate my current proficiency. Recently, I finished a "refresher" graduate-level course at UNR, and am independently reading an assortment of literature from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and others.

While a student, I was a teachers assistant in a chemistry lab at my college. During school, I spent numerous hours studying with large groups of students. Together we practiced methods for teaching our knowledge, this way everyone in the group understood the material.

Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participated in an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at UC Riverside. During my undergraduate work I was a teacher’s assistant (T.A.) for two years. As a T.A. it was my job to run physics for other undergraduates. This included both the calculus based physics and non-calculus based physics. I also worked with an elementary teacher as part of an outreach program to bring science into the class room. I like teaching by giving real life examples and creating hands-on situations. One of the most beneficial things that I have found in helping students is to give a variety of examples and offer different ways of explaining things. Another important thing, especially with math, is the ability to be patient.
I recently graduated the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in Secondary Math Eduation. I just completed my semester of internship in high school mathematics.
