As a special education teacher, I am required to possess patience. I feel I have a great deal of patience, as I taught students with moderate to severe disabilities. My teaching style was one in which I developed creative ways to achieve specific life goals. Age appropriate materials and activities were a must in my classroom and although a student may have been learning his/her colors, I would use functional things to teach them such as road signs, rather than the common elementary objects such as balls, counting bears, etc. I believe that all students are handicapped, some just more so than others. I taught for the public school system in Memphis, TN for 17 years with 15 of those years in the same school. I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade and for 3 years I taught a second/third split class of exceptional students. I quit teaching for a short period because I adopted 2 children overseas. However, I worked part-time as a computer instructor for preschoolers for about 2 years.
