As a special eduation major, I was provided with various methods of teaching using adaptations and modifications to meet student's needs. I taught at the high school level for 3 years. As a requirement of the special education curriculum, I developed yearly attainable goals for each of my students with documented modifications for each area. I developed numerous activities and tasks for the students to perform in order to meet their goals for the year. The majority of my students were moderate to severely disabled, however, for the students whom I was able to teach subject areas to, I did so at the elementary level.

I love the give and take of working with high school students. I relish hearing fresh, young opinions and seeing how they decide what they believe in and why. My style entails showing a student the relevance of what he or she is doing. It is important for a child to know WHY what they are supposed to be learning is so important; they need to know how it will help them years from now after the classes are over. My best quality as a teacher is my ability to connect on a level that is comfortable for my students. When teaching, I want to instill in each child a love for learning. I do this, first of all, by setting the mood of the classroom - meaning, I make it conducive for learning with an attitude of happiness and respect for each child; believing that I can find attributes that I like about each child, and making the atmosphere pleasant, cozy, and fun. Secondly, I instill the class rules with positive outcomes so the environment is always positive. Usually this takes about a week of consistency, then my class is ready to take off!
