I am a troubleshooter. In my experience, there is usually one aspect of mathematics that a student has never been comfortable with, one aspect that poisons his or her interactions with all other facets of the subject. I begin by meeting a student on his or her own terms: we talk about the class and we go over the exercises that the student currently struggles to complete. That process gives me the information I need to pinpoint the source of the trouble, however far back it goes, and then we may begin working in earnest to resolve the underlying deficit. I received a teaching certificate in college through an internship in Buenos Aires where I taught English. At the University of Virginia, I tutored international graduate students. I worked with elementary children who had reading and behavioral difficulties through a volunteer program. I have tutored many children in French. I lived in France during high school, and have since then dedicated myself to languages. I received a BA in comparative literature which is a study of French and Spanish literature. I prefer to use the Socratic method when teaching. It allows me to interact with my students, giving them autonomy and a sense of worth. I am sensible to their ideas -no matter how far fetched they may be at times- and always supportive in their approaches. Also, I do not hesitate to incorporate technology in the classroom, as this medium has become a very popular and powerful instrument of teaching and learning over the years when properly applied. I will graduate this summer with a doctorate of arts in Mathematics. I have taught a total of 14 undergraduate-level mathematics courses in a broad range of subject ranging from developmental math to linear algebra.
