Experience Summary
I tutored my way through 5 years of college. Most of that tutoring took place in drop-in learning centers at Blue Mountain Community College and Eastern Oregon University. In that time I have tutored every aspect of mathematics from remedial arithmetic to calculus and statistics, and won the 2009 EOU Award for Outstanding Academic Support. I have worked with high school teenagers while student-teaching in pursuit of a Master’s degree in education, but I learned that I am far more effective as a one-on-one troubleshooter than a classroom ringmaster.
Teaching Style
I am a troubleshooter. In my experience, there is usually one aspect of mathematics that a student has never been comfortable with, one aspect that poisons his or her interactions with all other facets of the subject. I begin by meeting a student on his or her own terms: we talk about the class and we go over the exercises that the student currently struggles to complete. That process gives me the information I need to pinpoint the source of the trouble, however far back it goes, and then we may begin working in earnest to resolve the underlying deficit.
