I tutored my way through 5 years of college. Most of that tutoring took place in drop-in learning centers at Blue Mountain Community College and Eastern Oregon University. In that time I have tutored every aspect of mathematics from remedial arithmetic to calculus and statistics, and won the 2009 EOU Award for Outstanding Academic Support. I have worked with high school teenagers while student-teaching in pursuit of a Master’s degree in education, but I learned that I am far more effective as a one-on-one troubleshooter than a classroom ringmaster. I believe languages are full of life. Although grammar is important and necessary, it should not be stale. I think it is essential to maintain the vibrancy of a language with exciting materials, like magazines and games. I also listen carefully to the student to learn what they will find most interesting; a discussion of French cuisine, or Latin American tango? For children, I find using imaginary scenarios is effective and entertaining. I think, for everyone, stretching the mind to learn a language should be rewarding and fun! I have an M.A. in Sociology from San Diego State University and am currently employed at San Diego City College, where I have worked as an adjunct instructor of sociology for ten years. I have also taught at Grossmont College, Cuyamaca College, and San Diego State University. My courses cover topics such as introduction to sociology, sociology of the family and alternative lifestyles, and social issues (criminality, gender, etc). In addition, I have experience in related fields, having worked as an Overnight Counselor at Casa Pacifica, a 14-bed transitional residential treatment program for mentally ill adults in summer 2008. I will graduate this summer with a doctorate of arts in Mathematics. I have taught a total of 14 undergraduate-level mathematics courses in a broad range of subject ranging from developmental math to linear algebra. As an undergraduate, I worked part time in the Idaho State University tutoring center tutoring mathematics up to the calculus 3 level. I am a very energetic and interactive teacher. I am quite patient with my students and try to use many different techniques to allow for different learning styles.
