Math Can be Fun!

My teaching style is for the student to be methodical with their work and identify key words. I offer correction but also like to be patient to truly understand which part gives the student a struggle.
I have been tutoring in mathematics from basic elementary math to Calculus I for the last 10 years. Studying engineering showed me how meticulous I had to be with my study habits and I am now able to teach other students these same tips. I currently work as a tutor at Gulf Coast State College where I am familiarized with the material and common questions daily. I also offer freelance tutoring for students of all ages.

As a graduate of a private college, I have always been driven to perform at the top of my game. I have received two Bachelors degrees in both English literature and theater. Early in my collegiate career I gained a position as a teaching assistant (TA) and taught a required first year course for 3 out of my 4 years of college. In this position, I noticed that a lot of writing skills were missing from first year students that I felt that they should hav possessed and created and implemented a collegiate level writing and researching workshop that the college still uses. In addition to my TA position, I tutored nursing students in anatomy and physiology and biology classes.
I love teaching and learning. I grew up going to Montessori schools and truly believe that everyone is capable of learning its just finding the right way to teach that person--not all students can be boxed in ... read more

Failure is never an option for any child provided that he or she has the right access in the learning environment. I will start with the student whereever they are academically and get them to where they need to be. Reassuring and encouraging the students as we both achieve our goals.

I have both a bachelors degree and masters degree in business administration/management. Both of these degrees have given me a high level of knowledge in many areas such as finance, accounting, math in general, writing, and presentations/projects. I have always been an extremely sharp student excelling in most any course I have taken. I could tutor any of the k-12 age groups, and probably many college level students (depending on the course). I have experience in training others through my work as a service coordinator and a supervisor at a fortune 500 company.
My teaching style really depends on the person I am working with. People learn different ways. It is important to identify what works best for the person. For example, some people may learn through discussion, while others may need to see pictures or presentations of the subject matter. I like to identify how the person lear ... read more

There is no feeling like the joy felt once a student grasps a concept you're trying to share. For that reason, I attempt to explain things in multiple ways. I also believe in honestly letting students know why and how their studies will benefit their future. Another thing I stand behind is students learning to also teach their new concepts once they have mastered them. My overall goal is to empower them to be thinkers, doers, and to expand their feeling of self-worth.
My college experience in the subjects of Economics, Government, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies was rigorous. After finishing undergraduate courses, I worked for a program that sent college students out to public schools to be Teacher's Aids. We were expected to help any students who were falling behind in a subject. The experience was so rewarding that after graduation, I took a position working with trou ... read more

Many of the things in life that we don't "get" are things we don't understand. When teaching, I try to break things down and simplify them so they can be easily understood. Often the kids in my class are those who do not like to be challenged, so I incorporate a lot of questions to provoke thinking and problem solving on their own. Since repetition is a key component to learning, I review a lot which requires patience but pays great dividends in the long run. I try to keep things fresh and fun by adding a lot of variety, and also like to motivate with real-world examples so students can see a practicle use for what they are learning.

Children are individuals and you must find their style of learning and be able to adapt your teaching style for that child. I believe that you must geniunely love children and teaching to be able to reach children. They can sense when someone really cares. I have a passion for learning that I believe translates to the children I work with.
I taught preschool for 5 years and had a home day care center for 4 years. I have worked as a paraprofessional at Springfield Elementary for the 3 years and was an after school tutor for the SES program for 2 terms for two different companies. I love helping students and believe every child has the ability to learn. I am passionate about encouraging them and inspiring them on the journey; sometimes, it may take multiple attempts before a child learns how to successfully organize an outline for an essay or complete an algebraic equation, which requires patience, consideration and persistence of the instructor. By meeting your child at whatever level they are on, and understanding his or her learning style, I will be there to motivate and push them to perform their best through modeling, guided practicing, and providing examples that are relevant to them. I can help train your child to become a confident, independent learner.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my education experience, I was taught that whole learning is the best form of education. An education is not just gained through books; every life experience is capable of teaching a child. Math can be taught through books, games or even by counting the number of sprinkles on their sundae. Science can be taught by explaining why the cloud is in the sky and why it is raining. My experience has taught me that each child is different and how they learn is different. Each experience must be tailored to each child and when accomplished the child will excel. This is not always easy, but the reward of seeing that moment of comprehension in a child’s eyes is worth the effort!
I began my teaching experience during college by first working as a teacher’s aide, after which I transitioned into substitute teaching, tutoring and after school care. Eventually I graduated and worked ... read more

My Florida teaching certificate is in Elementary Education 1-6 and Reading k-12. I have tutored with SES program in Bay County for the past three years in both reading and math for elementary age students.
I believe that all children have the ability to learn. After 38 years in the teaching profession I find each year to be just as exciting as the last one. It is always so amazing to watch the "light bulb" come on with each child you touch. I believe that children learn by doing and am a firm believer in the hands on approach. I have worked the past five years providing intervention for at-risk students at my school. I also work with teachers to help them achieve the very best from their students.

I recently retired after teaching thirty-six years. Most of my experience involved exceptional education student with learning disabilities. The last several years I taught Reading to struggling students who did not score well on the FCAT. I enjoy teaching all Reading skills but I particularly enjoy working with students who know how to decode but can not comprehend what they have read. Teaching kids that they must learn to interact with the text to improve comprehension is my specialty. I also enjoy the emergent reader, though I will work with older students.
"It isn't rocket science," is often the reply when asked why some kids have such a difficult time learning to read. I'll have to disagree, because for some kids the process of learning to read is just as complex. That's why it is so necessary for a reading teacher of struggling students to explore all avenues when providing r ... read more
