Gifted math tutor wants to help your student enjoy math!

I have a gift for working with students who struggle. I know where they are going to trip up and I am prepared to answer the questions that they do not even know they will have! I know at least 3 or 4 different ways to explain different concepts so if your student does not understand one way, I have another way. My comments on tutoring Algebra I : I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade. I am certified K-6th grade. I also taught advanced math in a GED/HiSet program. I currently teach ESOL/CIVICS for an Adult School.

My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. My comments on tutoring Algebra I : This class would have to do with things like systems of equations, etc. Even though I took these classes years ago, I still remember them as if I had taken them yesterday.

I don't have much experience in tutoring students. However, in what experience I have, has been limited to college students and my my best friend's youngest daughter. Absolutely hated math with a passion. After tutoring her for a few weeks, she went to take a placement exam to determine what college class she would take math. She did very well on the exam, and her mom was impressed with how I was able to break things down in a way her daughter could understand.
Depends on the needs of the student. In my first meeting with best friend's daughter, I gave her a sample quiz to fill out to gauge where she was. Then, we began to work through areas where she was having the worst issues. I focused on those and explained things to where she could better understand. The lights go on when a student grasps a subject.

I have tutored my friend's daughter in math and English. I have assisted her with science and social studies projects. Her ADHD can inhibit the learning process, but we are able to work through the problems. Learning about weighted blankets helped me work with her. She is a kinetic learner. my nieces are both visual learners. I have to adapt to each learning style.
Teaching brings me pleasure. What I do is to show them, help them, then have them do whatever I am teaching them to do. Sometimes one of the steps may have to be repeated, but this process really works well.
