In working with students one needs to have the ability to connect with that student at their level of understanding. This can be different for every student, and the tutor needs to adjust to the student. A tutor has to be able to do this or the student will not be any better off. It is my firm belief that I need to find a way to connect with each student, and find a way to help them understand what they need to learn. Very often in a school setting it is not only the subject matter that can give students a tough time, but a lot of times it is that the student either freezes on tests and quizzes or may not have good test taking skills, and sometimes this needs to be learned as well as a particular subject. I believe in inquiry based learning, or teaching any subject by incorporating the student's natural curiosity and drawing connections to their interests. I don't taking a long time to teach a student how to approach a single problem or concept and foster their understanding of the material so that they will understand how to approach the problem on their own. In other words, I put energy into explaining why they should do something so that they can reason through it themselves in a test situation. Since a child, I have always been curious of the world around me. My interests culminated with the completion of two degrees in the natural sciences. Working with different age groups, have shown me that every child is their own individual. I get to know the children I work with to understand the best approach to take with them. I can work in small groups, large groups, or individual. Some children are shy and may work better alone. It takes patience to teach and I am blessed to have that gift.
