I am currently a Biology Major at the University of Southern Maine. I have completed my degree requirements for my BS, I’m finishing up by taking an additional 9 credits this semester before walking for graduation in the Spring, May 2011. During my four years in college I have taken 11 laboratory courses, providing me with extensive knowledge and experience in writing research papers, lab reports and scientific reviews. I have experience in math, reaching a Calculus level; completion of upper level courses in Chemistry, Statistics, and Physics; a variety of liberal arts courses. I was an assistant girl’s high school basketball coach for two years, and have been tutoring high school and college students in math and science for two years. As passionate of a student as I am, I equally enjoy being an active part in another’s understanding and learning towards a new and challenging subject.

Being a recent graduate of a university I am able to relate to students and understand the academic setting. I enjoy teaching and am motivated to help students achieve results in the form of grades and understanding. I think each student has their own learning style and finding that is important to the teaching process. As a recent graduate of a high ranking tech school with my BS in Business Administration and Materials Engineering I am very familiar with the academic setting and learning styles of various students. My areas of study require me to be familiar with high level mathematics and science in addition to an understanding of communication skills in both technical writing, such as lab reports, and business communication techniques. I am very enthusiastic about teaching and about science. I believe that all students can learn if they are supported and if they are shown how the information they are learning is relevant to their lives. With high expectations and a strong support system, all students, even those who are struggling, can achieve their full potential. Knowing students as people is extremely important when teaching as it allows for a teacher to choose methods that work best for the individual student (learning styles and multiple intelligences come in to play here). Students should feel both safe and comfortable in their learning environment so that they may reap the most benefits from education. I believe that all students maintain the right to learn in an environment that is safe as well as conducive to learning.
