Political Science is one of my top subjects!

I am currently a graduate student at George Mason University completing a degree in Secondary Education. I have 18+ years experience in the Air Force and have homeschooled two of my children using a classical curriculum. I believe each student has a unique learning style and I strive to help students understand how they best learn to achieve their best results. My goal is not only for students to learn the content, but enjoy learning and to gain confidence in their own ability to master content.

My comments on tutoring Political Science : I particularly enjoy relating Political Science to current developments in the United States and around the world. I have taught the subject in high school and college.

I am a professional historian who also has more than 15 years experience in teaching ESL and standard English courses. While I have been a community college and high school teacher for more than 20 years, I have also worked in non-teaching fields that have enriched the content of my lessons. For example, I have been a Foreign Service Officer, an Escort-Interpreter, a broadcast journalist, and a park ranger.
My teaching style emphasizes active student participation in the learning process.

Let's get back down to the basics (Latin, History, Science)

I like to boil things down to the basics. With Latin and Science that means learning as much as one can about the basic elements and then building one step at a time on those basics. In history, it means learning the story, and telling the story.
I recieved a BA degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I majored in Classical Civilization (with a Latin Concentration) and History. I have 12 years of experience teaching Latin. The courses I have taught include introductory courses, Latin I, Latin II, and Latin III. 3 years of Life Science teaching experience. 4 years of History teaching experience (as a tour guide and history interpreter) 12 years of experience teaching writing as well.

Political Science is one of my top subjects!

I am flexible and adapt to the students ability to learn. Some people are auditory while others are visual and after an assessment, it is best to know which approach to take to best help someone learn.

My greatest strength as a tutor is that I know what it is like to have no knowledge of a foreign language. Thus, I am able to diagnose the particular difficulties a student is having and provide appropriate guidance in resolving those difficulties. I believe in repetition and drills, both written and spoken. In addition, I also believe in using the target language as much as possible. I will encourage students to use what knowledge they have of the target language in order to communicate with me. I used to be afraid to speak foreign languages, but several of my teachers were able to create a comfortable enough environment such that I was no longer afraid. I hope to do the same.
My education in international relations and international public affairs has allowed me to gain knowledge in the social sciences and foreign languages. As an undergraduate student, I studied and worke ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am actually in the process with my students, their victories are my victories. I want my students to be proud of the work that they have done and the achievements that they have made. I give my students the information, I show them how to apply the information through modeling, I practice with them and then I release them to apply the technique themselves. Afterward I assign an project for an artifact that allows them through written words to translate their knowledge to another person. It is my goal to prepare them for life outside of the classroom, failure is not an option.
I have a proven success rate in assisting my students in excelling on standardized tests. In the 2007-2008 school year my students achieved double digit gains on the MSAs (Middle School Assessments).
