Education is a key to a high quality of life. I have earned a BS in Chemical Engineering (math, science, chemistry) and a BA in Ministry and Leadership (Bible, management, essay writing). In addition, I lack 3 hours from completing a Master's Degree in Education. My tutoring experience has primarily been with students working to earn their GED. However, I have tutored and mentored several people over time on various subjects. My teaching experience includes a teaching a weekly Bible class last year. I enjoy teaching and there is no greater reward for a tutor than to share knowledge to others and to see students grow in knowledge and confidence. Although I never actually taught a class, I was able to learn how to adapt to the individual needs of a student. Some learn visually, others with games, practice, hands on... and the list continues. I find starting out with the basics and working up to the harder subjects is important. So, with the assignment given I also ask other questions of the student to see if they understand the more basic concepts of the problem as well as answer the question. I find this helps them understand the process more completely and the student ends up giving more complete answers on assignments and exams. At the end of each session I hope the person I am helping better understands the material and can gain a little confidence about the subject. I actually started tutoring while I was still in college, helping out one of the science/math teachers, and proctoring classes when she needed me to. I have a BS in Natural Science with a biology emphasis, from which I've gained knowledge in most areas of science and math. Besides helping to teach in college, I also was a tutor for three years, in several subjects including Chemistry, Algebra, Calculus I and II, Physics, and more. "Teaching" was the way I supported myself through college. I was a lab instructor, university experience teacher, cultural anthropology tutor, nutrition educator, and even a gymnastic instructor. I was thankful to find the College of St. Mary's Masters of Arts in Teaching. It is a solid program that has given me the opportunity to have a formal education in teaching.
