My comments on tutoring World History : Highly qualified k-8

For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. I also was trained in the IB curriculum, and implemented it for 10 years.
Constructivist, multi-sensory, inquiry-based.

EXPERT TUTOR-MultiSubject; Home/ONLINE; +WRITING instructor

I am a Cum Laude graduate with a B.A. from Belmont University, and I have been an educator for more than a decade since. My experience includes classroom teaching, small group instruction, and individualized tutoring (in person OR online via Zoom, email, FaceTime etc.) I specialize in English, Language Arts, writing composition, Latin, and other Humanities subjects. But I am also an effective & experienced instructor of Maths or Sciences. Outside of subject-specific tutoring, I offer assistance with academic advising, study skills, test prep, daily homework, and any written assignments. World History is one of my top subjects! I have an MA in history and am most knowledgeable about European social and art history of the 18th century to the mid 20th century.

I received my MA in the History of Art from the University of Georgia in August of 2010 and specialize in modern and contemporary art. I believe that an appreciation of art and its history is best cultivated by examining the major themes and tropes of past art and design and structurally linking it to the social history and art of later periods and when possible to local art. I have a broad education in all periods of art, but I'm most proficient with art from the mid 18th-21st centuries. I teach art appreciation as an adjunct instructor and am currently curating an exhibit of photographic prints and illustrations at the Nashville Public Library. As a graduate assistant I also assisted students with writing and improving their understanding of the material. You may find a more complete CV/resume at http://uga.academia.edu/LauraGolobish.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently completing my final year at Vanderbilt Law School. Over the past three years, I have taught a class and provided one-on-one tutoring for students preparing to take the LSAT. I also taught an upper level course while in grad school (it was in radio production). While I was in undergrad, I spent time tutoring elementary and middle school aged children over the internet. All together, I have helped dozens of individual students in a private setting and nearly a hundred students in the classroom. Personally, I love numbers and have always been very comfortable with math. But my grades and test scores have always been just as strong in other subjects, and I am confident that I can help you or your child in any of the areas listed below.

I like to see where the student is and meet him there. Look at what needs to be taught and discover the best way to impart that learning to the individual child.
I have taught K for 13 years. I understand the value of one on one time, and that students are all different. Recently I spent 10 months teaching missionary children in Uganda. There I taught 4th, 5th, and 7th graders. Students in my class have had vision issues, autism, aspergers, and ADD/ADHD. With each situation, I have evaluated where the student was and revamped how I was teaching to meet their needs.

Giving students the tools to fulfill their life's potential!

I like to give students the tools and watch them practice using those tools for themselves. I encourage two-way communication.
I have been a substitute teacher and tutor for general education and special education students of the Williamson County School District. Before that, I was working with adults and students in a ministry environment back in Texas as a worship leader and music teacher. My education has centered around music, theology, and literature primarily (with a general exposure to various other sciences).

More About This Tutor...

I hold a bachelor's degree in Political Science, which focused on writing and research. I earned an alternative teaching certification, which allowed me to work as an inclusion teacher at the middle school level, which allowed me to spend a great deal of time working with small groups and in one on one settings. I have taught life sciences, Earth sciences, world geography, and United States history. I also have a year's experience of tutoring beginning reading.
I enjoy working with students and showing them the joy of learning. I believe that children learn most in small groups and one on one environments. I believe that children learn best when they feel respected. I think that everyone has skills and talents to offer. I try to help my students find their own gifts and work to allow them to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

A Little Bit About Me...

As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

More About This Tutor...

After graduating from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in English, I spent a year working as a reading tutor in an elementary school through AmeriCorps (the specific program I worked with was the Washington Reading Corps). Following my year in AmeriCorps I spent nearly 3 years working in the Seattle School District as a substitute instructional assistant. During this time I worked in many of the same schools, providing small group and individual tutoring and educational support. In addition, I earned my TESOL certificate from Western Washington University in 2004. Part of this 27-credit program included a 2-month teaching practicum in Mexico. I have also spent time tutoring ESL in evening programs over the past few years through organizations such as North Seattle Community College and St. James ESL in Seattle.
