My comments on tutoring Sign Language : I've known Sign Language as a child to communicate with Deaf & Hard of Hearing friends and I've used Sign Language on my jobs as well.

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from Lewis & Clark College (1993) from Portland, Oregon. I've been a Special Ed Teacher for almost 20 years....taught the Deaf/Blind students; Deaf/Hard of Hearing students; Multiple-handicapped students with medical issues; as well as worked with students struggling in Reading; Writing; Math; etc. As of right now, I have the privilege of working with variety of Deaf/Blind Adults within the communities around them as grocery shopping, 'others' shopping, etc.

Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I taught ASL for over 25 years; and I'm fluent in ASL, PSE and SEE. I taught in homeschool; private school; and colleges.

I taught at four colleges for over 16 years. I'm currently teaching part time at one college for the last ten years. I taught ASL for over 25 years. I teach students and members in home-school; secondary private school; college level; and community. Other skills that I have are nursing assistant, dialysis technician, cosmetologist, cook, job coach for developmental disabled deaf clients, behavior modification, program manager, and restaurant assistant manager. I do public speaking about dogs for the deaf and about ASL. I'm a Jill of all trades.
I teach then I repeat to review the signs by using sentences. I work in one on one and in groups. I'm patient and I look for ways to help the students remember the signs. I help them apply all aspects of the deaf culture in their rapport. I have experience working with students with disabilities.

I have a B.A. in Technical Theatre. This knowledge in the backstage end of theatre deals greatly in literature, particularly the study of dramatic writing. Having already a strong knowledge of English studies this experience has further aided my skills in grammar, analytical input, as well as in reading and writing practices. Having graduated Magna Cum Laude I am confident in my literary experience and my ability to pass it on to children of all ages. This knowledge has been greatly reinforced by my prior position as a teacher's assistant for almost two years. I have worked closely with the children on reading, writing, math, and science and greatly enjoy witnessing their accomplishments in these subjects.
As a teacher's-assistant for children ages 4-6 I have been able to gain experience working with them one on one and in whole groups for almost two years. This has taught me ... read more

Interactive--listening to and learning from student to determine "where they're at". Then, posing questions to enable them to find their own beginning/solution/answers. If session doesn't find a promising beginning, start from a base and progress with them. Interaction prevents or indicates "going too fast" or overwhelming them--"the eyes" are engaged or indicate "shut-down". Making the math or education "mean something" provides a reason for learning or further developing the concepts. Encouragement and sincere compliments are very important. Sharing your own struggles or an "ah-huh" moment helps ease the role differences toward a comfortable, encouraging, learning relationship.
I have tutored and educated staff to raise their knowledge and understanding in an effort to help them appreciate their role and the benefit of their effort toward the goals of the overall departm ... read more

I have work with special education student, as well as advance placement student. I have only noticed one difference with each group and that is the pace that the classroom goes in. Although I enjoy working with small groups or one on one with student I believe that I am able to work with more then ten students at a time. I really try to let the kids explain to me how they interoperate the dictation first and then help them a long. I let all the students do as much as they can on their own, I believe is the best way to assists a child which I have done volunteering at the Land L Learning center, I worked with young age group going into first and six grade to help them get up to grade level in reading. My goal as I help every child that I work with is to get them to be able to do it on their own with out any help by the end of the year.

A Little Bit About Me...

Everyone has the ability to learn but not everyone has the same ability. Most people are visual or tactile learners whereas most teachers, in my experience, use verbal/aural instruction methods. I believe in tailoring my teaching to the needs of the student and not to what I am most relaxed with. I have personally taught several tactile students who had to have something in their hands or they could not grasp the concepts. Other times I've instructed students in strong visual methods incorporating drawings, artwork and short videos.
During my studies at USU I worked at Adams Elementary both as a Teachers Aid as well as a Mentor during the After School Program. I worked one-on-one as well as in groups of students grade k-5. This position was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable that I've had and would love to continue. I have also taught American Sign Language at the University ... read more

I encouraged many different teachers to work with me in my classroom. I enjoy meeting the needs of the full continuum of learners through the use of lots of movement, working with partners, and working in small groups. I use lots of praise, and consistent consequences for my management system. I love teaching.
I have taught special needs for 25 years, and third grade for nine years. While teaching special needs I worked with many kinds of students, including those with: autism, physical disabilities, downs syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, ODB, and many others.
