I began learning Spanish in the 4th grade at an excellent public school in Ohio. I became fast friends with a foreign exchange student from Nicaragua, whose limited English proficiency was my greatest opportunity to learn Spanish. In my junior year at Otterbein College I traveled to Segovia, Spain and studied at the University of Segovia for two semesters. Since that time I have taught ESL and Spanish to hundreds of students. I have traveled extensively in Latin America and the Caribbean, and am familiar with idiomatic expressions and local customs throughout the Hispanic community. I am currently working as a Spanish Interpreter at Friendship Community Care in Russellville, Arkansas, and I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish at Arkansas Tech University, which has enabled me to increase my knowledge of the Spanish language. I am also currenty studying to receive a Master's Degree in English-TESOL option, which is Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (the same as ESL). Working as a Spanish Interpreter, I work with pre-school aged children. I work with them during their therapy time, especially in Speech Therapy. I love to teach children and find it both a challenge as well as an inspiration. When teaching I find it necessary to determine the learning styles of each student as well as areas of interest. Once these have been determined it is much easier to determine the areas of academic needs and teach according to how they best learn. Learning should not be seen as a chore but rather as an opportunity to succeed in life. Whenever possible I include technology into the curriculum to enhance teaching. If teaching a large class it may be necessary to break into small groups to focus on the needs of certain students while providing enrichment activities for others.
