More About This Tutor...

I have a fairly easy going personality, but know when to crack down if students are getting off topic or out of hand. I'm very approachable and happy.
I graduated from Sonoma State with a BA in English, Single subject emphasis. I am taking a year off before I go back to get my teaching credential in reading. The majority of my classes were geared towards the teaching of reading and writing and I feel confident in my ability to help students improve in those areas. I also worked in a High School writing center and tutored for the past two semesters. I love being around kids and helping them. Currently I live in Tahoe City, but am more than willing to drive to Reno or other areas as well.

More About This Tutor...

I have experience tutoring anything from phonics to college level writing. I taught preschool for a year and a half at the Lion and Lamb Christian Preschool in Reno, NV. I have also tutored at the UNR Writing Center (when it still existed) during the Fall semester of '08. Since October 2008 I have tutored at the Reno Huntington Learning Center where I teach phonics all the way up to SAT and ACT Verbal test prep. While at UNR I took an upper division English Class entitled "How to Tutor an English Writer." I also have a minor of Spanish from UNR. I am by no means fluent in the language but can read and understand it fairly well. I am comfortable tutoring anything below advanced high school Spanish.
I think that kids light up life and make it interesting. That's why I love working with them. I love the intellectual stimulation of the older age groups and the academic challe ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love helping people achieve their dreams and goals and I have high expectations for all children and adults I am teaching. As an educator I encourage my students to believe in themselves and convince them they have the ability to be successful in whatever they want to achieve. One of my students was struggling with C's and D's for grades and he was getting extra help but he was frustrated. Once or twice a week we would chat about it. I encouraged him to put forth a little more effort and I promised him his studies would get a little easier over time. Sure enough I saw the young man the following year and he came running up to me to tell me he made the honor roll. I never gave up on him and I know I played a part in his success.
I started out as a Computer Science major and changed my major to education and became a certified educator and taught for eight years in the private ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a college graduate with both a bachelor's and master's degree, I have always been seeking excellence in learning. I have, over the years written many papers, reports, and essays, and consequently have learned and used many writing skills in many contexts. I have written academic papers, mental health reports, and sermons. For the past 20+ years in my work as a pastor and mental health rehab specialist I have worked directly with youth and children in a teaching role, healping them to learn about themselves and to express it verbally and in writing.
I enjoy teaching and see it as one of my gifts. In all of my jobs I've seen it as my goal to help others learn and grow. I believe that everyone is a natural learner, everyone is curious. Each of us has a different learning style and I am sensitive to that in each person that I teach. I am a naturally calm and friendly person a ... read more

Having finished a financial planning course, I have also recently brushed up on my math skills. I have a well-rounded education and am constantly learning as I tutor my own children with their homework.
My teaching style involves fun and an active student. Self-discovery is the best way to learn and retain knowledge. I see myself as the facilitator; I give my students the tools, so they can figure out problems on their own and become more self-reliant. I want learning to be fun, involving games, healthy competition and active learning, so studen ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My commitment to education can be found very simply. At 28 years old, I decided to go back to college to complete my final two years of school. I attained my BA 3 years later, having had to work full time to support my wife and two young children. My goal is, at some point, to return to school to attain my teaching credential, so I can fulfill my dream of being an English teacher.
Children are not students. They are not tools, nor are they pieces of a larger machine. They are people, impressionable and as important as the rest of the world. So, then, why would we expect everyone to learn the same? To teach a child in any discipline requires, in some cases, finesse, and an ability to adapt to their needs. That is what I bring to the table. I believe in a laid-back, friendly approach to tutoring, one where the student's needs are met before those of the classroom. After all ... read more
