A Little Bit About Me...

I first tutored for two years during high school when a family friend asked me to help him teach kids chess at four elementary schools. I thoroughly enjoyed these experiences and developed a patient tutoring style that emphasizes critical listening. I continued to tutor in college, after a professor recommended me to the Central Washington University Writing Center. I trained with eighteen other students and was one of five selected to continue in practicum classes for the 2008-2009 school year. I went on to work as a paid writing consultant for the fall and winter quarters of the 2009-2010 school year and consulted 293 undergraduate and graduate students on writing from a variety of disciplines.

As a high school honors student, I majored in English and achieved the highest score possible (five -- 5) on the English Exam. In College, I pursued my interest in English language by majoring in Literature, with an emphasis upon etymology, linguistics, speech and rhetoric. My senior thesis on the poetic technique of Alexander Pope earned both an "Honors A" and that year's sole English Faculty Award. I later chose to attend a law school that was renowned for its general emphasis upon writing and, in particular, "plain English" legal communication.

I spent most of my high school and college career honing my writing and reading ability, and through four years of English classes I have developed excellent writing skills. Additionally, my computer and internet knowledge has grown through my studies and professional work. I feel comfortable with all styles of writing, and enjoy discussing writing and reading with all age groups. I believe that teaching is guided by the student. When the student shows that something is working we keep using it, if they don't like something we try something new. Everyone is different. Some people need more hands on, others need more example, and some people want the material to be life relevant so we do more conversation and real life stuff. In all cases it's best to use all methods to make learning whole, real, and to make it stick.
I have tutored in Colombia as an English tutor. I have spent several years volunteering as a tutor at various high schools, middle schools, and have worked professionally as a tutor at Seattle University. I am a native Spanish speaker. I taught marriage education classes in Spanish for 2.5 years.
