As a high school honors student, I majored in English and achieved the highest score possible (five -- 5) on the English Exam. In College, I pursued my interest in English language by majoring in Literature, with an emphasis upon etymology, linguistics, speech and rhetoric. My senior thesis on the poetic technique of Alexander Pope earned both an "Honors A" and that year's sole English Faculty Award. I later chose to attend a law school that was renowned for its general emphasis upon writing and, in particular, "plain English" legal communication.
I love to see students grasp a new concept and revisit their work with greater pride and confidence as a result. I have earned three college degrees, a BA in Urban and Regional Planning,a BA in English Literature and a MA in Natural Resource Sciences. I also have over 25 years of experience as a Senior Planner and as a Planning Director, positions that required me to train and educate a staff of people. I have worked with various government officials and communities in developing schools, community centers, early childhood education centers and numerous other community facilities. I was responsible for writing grant applications which trained me in the art of writing compelling applications that were grammatically correct. I have tutored students in writing and English.

A Little Bit About Me...

If students lack motivation or direction, it’s often because they are trying to perform an advanced task without basic skills. For example, many students know about the “five-paragraph essay” format, but don’t know how to organize the individual sentences. The first part of my philosophy focuses on providing students with these basic skills, as doing so prepares and makes them eager to face their assignments. The second part of my philosophy involves research. When students don’t know something, I’ve found that they will be quick to give up without considering the resources available. By showing students how to teach themselves, I let them know that they do have the opportunity and ability to succeed if they put in the effort.
