Helping students learn and learn how to grow

I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.
My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. I work hard to get to know the student and tailor tasks and activities to their particular learning style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that teaching is guided by the student. When the student shows that something is working we keep using it, if they don't like something we try something new. Everyone is different. Some people need more hands on, others need more example, and some people want the material to be life relevant so we do more conversation and real life stuff. In all cases it's best to use all methods to make learning whole, real, and to make it stick.
I have tutored in Colombia as an English tutor. I have spent several years volunteering as a tutor at various high schools, middle schools, and have worked professionally as a tutor at Seattle University. I am a native Spanish speaker. I taught marriage education classes in Spanish for 2.5 years.

I got my BA in linguistics from the University of Washington, and earned an MLitt and PhD in English language from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. My training in English and linguistics has equipped me for critical thinking from both the literary and scientific angles, and given me detailed knowledge of English grammar. Past positions as a proofreader for EFL students, an IT tutor, and a reading tutor for primary-level students each add further dimensions of experience and versatility to my teaching repertoire.
