I like to break every concept and principle down into its most basic components. An artist breaks down a drawing into its basic shapes, and is able to create what may at first seem like a complex object to draw. Explaining mathematical principles is almost as difficult as learning them, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Teaching in groups and teaching individually both have their advantages and disadvantages. Teaching one-on-one allows the student to have individual attention, while teaching in groups allows more flexibility and allows students to learn concepts from each other. I consider myself able to do both, but one-on-one often works best.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student understands the WHY, the presentation of the problem does not matter.
As a Cal Poly graduate with a BS in Computer Science, I have had to master most math and computer science course material. My experience is teaching math to mostly older teens and young adults. Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participated in an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at UC Riverside. With the guidance of my primary investigator and a grad student, I gained experience doing research into the fabrication of nano-structures (in this case, reusable and gas-specific sensing devices, or an "e-nose"). Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught.
