More About This Tutor...

As an undergraduate, I attended Purdue University and worked as a teaching assistant where I ran my own lab, instructing students for one of their core management courses. In my junior year, I was asked to apply to an invitation-only program for an an accelerated MBA program only for exceptional students. I am now entering my final year of this program and will graduate in 2011 with a BS in Business Management and a Masters degree in Business Administration. The graduate program is team focused and emphasizes working with and teaching diverse groups of people.
I am a strong believer in teaching through examples and letting students try to apply the knowledge I have taught them at various smaller stages, then apply it to the bigger picture. I love working with kids, and I think that with patience, understanding, and time, all students are capable of reaching their potential.

I have extensive preparation and training that will allow me to succeed as an English tutor. I am a licensed substitute teacher in the state of Indiana. I have been actively teaching with Noblesville Schools (Noblesville, IN) since October of 2006. I have gained additional teaching experience as a Bible study teacher of two years. As such I lecture for about an hour and a half most Sunday afternoons. Additionally, I spent three years as a shift manager in food service where I was responsible for training new employees. I always received positive feedback from my trainees. I have specific expertise in the area of English and language arts. My undergraduate degree is in journalism but I also took and excelled at courses in composition, creative writing, and writing for broadcast. I learned from Strunk and White's 'Elements of Style' while also mastering AP Style. As a gradu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My first priority when working one-on-one with a student is to establish a positive connection. This cultivates trust and helps them to open up and show me what they really need help with. During instruction, I use humor to retain attention and profuse amounts of praise to build self-esteem. In terms of instruction, my experience allows me to break down difficult concepts and explain them in new and interesting ways. Whenever possible, I use hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
I have been working in education for over 6 years in a variety of settings. In San Francisco, I worked in a small non-profit independent school, an art and theatre-based after school program, and a public alternative school. Currently, I am working at Snacks Crossing in Pike Township. Over these years, I also tutored at the local Sylvan Learning Center. In each setting, I have always gravitated ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of a 'Public Ivy' institution, I have had a very well-rounded and intensive education. I earned two degrees from IU: a BA in Spanish and a BS in Biology and Chemistry. My experience involves subjects such as: Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry (General and Organic), Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Physics. I have had many students that were of the middle school, high school, and college levels. I also have some experience tutoring elementary-aged children. In all, I have between two and three years of experience.
While I enjoy working with a younger population, I have had more experience with middle school, high school, and college students. I am very patient and easy-going, but I also expect that my students perform the tasks asked of them in the time given, as to further reach our goals. I have a descriptive way of teaching, but I ... read more

My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. The first step is creating comfort and trust between the student and the tutor. To do this, when coaching Chemistry, I would have the student present a problem. Then, I'd say, well, let's figure this out together. And, truly, that is what we would do, step by step, by asking questions. What do we know? What do we need to figure out? Essentially showing them the thought process out loud, and involving them in obtaining the solution. This approach helps develop confidence. Repeating creates familiarity. Eventually, most students become confident enough to try one on their own, and my role becomes encourager, light-hearted and sincere.
As an engineer and manager, training employees was an integral component of work performed throughout my ten-year professional career. I created systems and procedures, f ... read more
