I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. All children can succeed in school given the right tools; just because they do not get the idea from one method does not mean that they won't get it from a different method. I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example, I often chose to teach language by acting out the word or phrase, or having a student act it out. However, there were some classes that were not responsive to this type of teaching and, as a result I resorted to what I had previously considered arcane and authoritarian: repetitious call and response, and by rote.
