In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. I personally believe in studying with the purpose of applying the subject in the real world, and will work with your student to develop a solid purpose for the material, as well as help him/her see how to apply the material. In time, it is my goal that your student will be able to study on his/her own, without my help, and be able to fully comprehend and use the data.

I have a passion for higher education and helping young men and women reach their academic goals. I facilitated several ethics courses at Gonzaga University and helped tutor fellow graduate students in research methods and statistical analysis at Oregon State University. My teaching style is focused on the individual student. I realize that not all students are receptive to the same teaching style, as a result I am a flexible teacher who is willing to change my approach if the student is not responding positively to my initial teaching techniques.
I have recently completed my Masters degree in Public Policy from Oregon State University where I worked as a social science researcher with the department of sociology. I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. Sometimes a positive and fun mentor is a great way to learn a difficult subject.
As an undergraduate at CSU, Sacramento I volunteered my time to tutor a student from the time she was in 6th grade through 8th grade. Tutoring was done mostly in math. I have a BA in Environmental Studie ... read more

I spent two years teaching and tutoring Autistic children. I aided in routine skills, verbal skills and dealing with change. I have worked with two different children on these skills. I also have extensive skills in writing and researching for my research papers. I also have great knowledge of APA format and can write an essay in no time flat.
I love working with children. I have helped with pre-K and grade school children with an emphasis on working with Autistic children. All children can succeed in school given the right tools; just because they do not get the idea from one method does not mean that they won't get it from a different method. I think that all children can learn regardless of age, learning ability or other status, if given a chance.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all of my students can learn the material presented to them, if it is presented in the correct way. I have taken a lot of time to learn about the brain research that has been done to discover how different students learn. I like to have several tricks in my bag so that if one approach does not work I will have other methods to try to allow others to grasp the same material in a different way that makes sense to them. I am particularly sensitive to students who feel defeated in mathematics education and reap great rewards when I see that they are beginning to understand and believe in themselves.

Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. I have tutored elementary school children thru the S.M.A.R.T. program as well as through classroom assistance programs. I am currently working on completing my Associate of Science degree in English and expect to have my degree in June 2010. I have gained a lot of experience through my schooling in regard to my writing, grammar and reading comprehension abilities.
I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had ... read more

I have recently graduated from Grove City College (PA) with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology. During my undergraduate studies, I was introduced to a curriculum largely in the fields of chemistry, physics, advanced mathematics (calculus I,II,III),genetics and biochemistry. I was exposed to a very rigorous survey of the general sciences with demanding writing requirements. Likewise, I am very proficient at communicating in the language of science. I have also taught several mid-term and final review sessions as an upper classmen.
As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. I enjoy teaching. Working with a student one-to-one or even in small groups allows a student to have their individual needs met. Tutoring has the advantage of catching the student where they are struggling to comprehend. I am patient, creative, and prefer to model examples for my students. I believe that a strong foundation in the basics will help a student grasp more difficult concepts. My favorite venue is the use of a dry erase board and having the student model back an example to evaluate if they understood the concepts or the steps to the solution.
I have been an educator for over 10 years. Even as an undergrad, I was interested in working with children and spent my summers employed with the YMCA's youth programs. As part of my undergraduate degree I taught English to adults. I taught English in Korea for one year before enrolling in my Masters of Education program. During the program I had two student teacher placements. My first placement was in a middle school mathematics class and my second placement was in a self-contained 5th grade classroom.
I teach in a collaboratively with students. I believe that treating students more as equals and less and repositories for teacher originated information, is more conducive to learning. I present students with the information and let them build their own understanding.

I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example, I often chose to teach language by acting out the word or phrase, or having a student act it out. However, there were some classes that were not responsive to this type of teaching and, as a result I resorted to what I had previously considered arcane and authoritarian: repetitious call and response, and by rote. These methods proved to be effective for certain classes. As a result, I am now open to any possible number of teaching methods.

My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.
Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University. For two years, I studied Chemistry and Biology while also taking classes in the Humanities. I eventually majored in International Political Economy and obtained minors in Spanish and Latin American Studies.
