I have experience with helping children with homework after school in the home as a babysitter. I also worked in a second grade classroom where I would help children who needed more time to grasp concepts especially in math, one on one, which helped me to develop patience and understanding and also gave me great tools to help explain concepts in many different ways until the child understands what the homework is asking of them.

I love helping students learn new information. Having studied Psychology, I find everyone interesting, and love to learn what makes them "tick". I use this tool to help me better understand where a student is coming from, what motivates them, and what their needs are when it comes to learning. I strive to be available to my students in a way the serves them best in their learning style.
I have been a Substitute Teacher for the past four years. I teach for grades K-12, and assist in special education. I also taught English to students while I stayed in Thailand. I especially enjoy working with Elementary students. I love to see students grow and learn new things.

As a graduate of the University of Saint Thomas, I have an English degree and am a few classes/credits short of a Business Administration degree. Every child and adult learns differently. It is imperative that adaptation to an individual's learning style is addressed. I truly believe that everyone can be successful academically. I want my students to learn within their own comfort zones. I strive to create as many avenues to learn as I can so that each student can be successful.
I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I am enrolled in a doctoral program currently to earn my Ed.D in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. I have a great amount of experience in research and writing and have been teaching at-risk youth for 2 years. Primarily, I teach all Social Studies classes. However, I am very comfortable tutoring and teaching English, Composition, and Science classes such as Biology, High School Genetics, and Anatomy.

My teaching career has afforded me the opportunity to work individually with students of all ages and from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. I believe each student thrives when he or she is able to explore the writing process in a tutorial context, as a complement to the classroom setting, which cannot address individual problems as effectively. Many students, especially those having difficulty with composition, grammar and mechanics, need patience and encouragement from a tutor before their styles of learning emerge and they are able to identify and resolve obstacles to learning. I love to see students make connections between their experience and larger ideas, and to see how they reflect one another. I believe that, when we are first able to write, we fall in love with the process and can rediscover that passion with some assistance at any stage of life.

Children have been my main interest for many years. I have an interest in children learning as much as they can. I believe that understanding and succeeding in Language, (speaking, listening, reading and writing) are the most important elements to all other learning. I have enjoyed working and seeing children become successful in their quest to learn. I differentiate reading to the needs of individual students so that they progress at their levels and abilities. From time to time, I am fortunate to meet former students and am delighted to learn of their successes..

First, I love helping people learn. I strive to show students and people that chemistry, math and science is all about a thought process and is something that everyone can learn. Teaching sciences is about helping and showing students how to approach the problems, and problem solve not to just solve problems individually. I also believe in using and finding many methods/examples to find how the student learns best.
I have extensive experience in teach chemistry to students. In the past while at the University of Wyoming I had extensive one on one tutoring sessions with both college students and HS students (AP students). I have also tutored in math, and physics in the past also.

I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level.
I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.

A Little Bit About Me...

When I started at the University of Minnesota in 2006, I began tutoring through an on-campus program named America Reads. Their mission is to increase literacy skills in elementary through high school aged youth in the community of the Twin Cities. I have worked with this program for over 3 years and have had experience tutoring kindergarten through third grade in reading and writing skills. I have attended workshops about ESL to help better apply my Spanish Studies major to my job. Due to the experiences I have had in the classroom and with my co-workers and supervisors, I have changed my major from Journalism and Mass Communication to Elementary Education, which I will start in Fall of 2009. I hope to combine my two concentrated areas of study and teach in a Spanish bi-lingual school.
I believe that my teaching style is more modern that what teachers have used when I was in eleme ... read more

I earned a BA in History from Occidental College and for the last year of school I worked part-time for a tutoring company called "The Academic Advantage" in the following subjects: Math (Algebra, Geometry), Spanish, Social Studies, and test preparation (for entry into private schools). During this time, I worked with both private clients and students contracted through the LAUSD school district. This provided me with valuable experience working with children of varying ability level as well as students who were economically and racially diverse. Over the past year, I have worked as a High School Special Education Assistant for a very successful charter school in St. Paul. This experience has given me valuable strategies for working with children who have a wide range of needs and learning styles. It has equipped me with the patience and tools for working with all types of students.< ... read more
