My comments on tutoring Genetics : I have not only taken several courses in genetics (including independent study of the genetics of development), but I have taught a basic genetics course. I have also tutored many students in various areas of genetics.

As a teacher and tutor, I focus on developing conceptual knowledge (rather than memorization), and structured study methods, problem-solving techniques, and test-taking skills, including post-test analyses of mistakes as a learning tool. I encourage the student to develop skills appropriate not only to the discipline, but to his or her own personal learning style. I like to use on-line interactive tutorials, especially with students who are highly visual or hands-on learners. At the same time, as a tutor,I like to interact with the student's instructor (and, where appropriate, the parents) to best serve his or her needs.
I have taught at three universities (The University of Michigan, Henry Ford Community College, and Lawrence Technological University) and tutored formally at two (Henry Ford Community College and Georgia Perimeter College). I have also tutored as an independent ... read more

Biology and Biomedical tutor

I have tutored and mentored high school and college students for over 3 years in the Biomedical field (Biology, Medicine- Anatomy, Physiology, Genetics,Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pre-med). I have a very flexible teaching style that depends on what the student wants. My goal is to make you understand the subject matter well. I employ a lot of teaching aids- especially visual aids to make concepts clear and help you pass tests.

I find that most students just don't know how to study Biology. I like to assess the students' familiarity and background with the subject and then discuss study options. Some people resond to flash cards, others to practice tests, and still more to oral quizzing. Maybe it needas to be a combination, but we work until we find a system that works. Then we tackle the subject material.
As an undergraduate, I was selected to be a tutor in the on-campus tutoring center, where I tutored students in all the sciences. This was where I discovered my talent and passion for tutoring and teaching. After college, I worked part-time as a para-professional tutor for a local junior college. Once I married and started a family, I used my MS in Biology to its full advantage by working part-time as an adjunct professor in Biology for local colleges.

My teaching style is based on the student’s learning style. Each child is different and may require different teaching methods to facilitate learning. Some children are more visual and may require more interactive exercises to learn. I do not believe in spoon-feeding information to children but taking the time to ensure that they fully grasped the concept of a problem and are able to think through a solution on their own. I will work to develop their critical thinking skills and will challenge them, so that they are not just passive learners but active participants in the cognitive process. I am patient and will work at the student’s pace encouraging him/her to give his/her best effort to the given task.
As an undergraduate student I was always in the top ten percentile of my math, chemistry and biology classes, and as a result, I tutored fellow college students in those respectiv ... read more

I taught in public school and private. While doing so and during summers, I tutored on my own. I got married in 1986, had three children and stayed out of the classroom for a while. I homeschooled my own children and began an ACCREDITED highschool for home schoolers. I taught and tutored all subjects. I have also worked with several learning disabled children. I can teach/tutor pretty much any subject ages K-college. I have also worked in the Writing Lab at Clayton State College. I feeel very qualified for this job.
I love children of all ages, including Middle School and Highschool. I do not alweats go by the book. I do what I feel is best for that particular child's learning style. I teach outside the box and encourage learning rather than straight memorization. I help children love learning.

As a trained research scientist I consider myself a liaison between the scientific genre and the student. My experience performing research as well as assisting with college courses such as an Introduction to Laboratory Techniques and Cell Biology provides me the ability to engage students in a hands-on, inquiry-based learning environment. Science and Math are the most difficult subjects and extra attention should be given when teaching these subjects. My creative and innovative teaching methods give students the opportunity to not only learn the various topics, but actually truly comprehend the idea and how it relates to the world.
I have been involved with tutoring at a very young age. I remember being in elementary school reading to the younger children that could not read. I am an advocate of every child receiving a fair chance at success in education. I have earned a Bac ... read more

My 20+ year teaching career began in high school when I ran an after-school tutoring program. At the University of Georgia I tutored for the chemistry and biology departments. I earned a BS in Genetics and a Masters of Education. I taught biology, physical science, ecology, and human anatomy in 2 public high schools in Georgia. I was nominated Teacher of the Year and earned the Georgia Science Teacher of Promise Award. Since then I have tutored math, science, reading, and test prep for grades 5-12 and college. I have recently renewed my Georgia Teaching Certificate for grades PK-5 and 7-12.
I am very much a hands-on instructor. Long ago, I heard the Chinese Proverb “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” These words embody my personal teaching philosophy. I utilize a varied and balanced set of teaching strategies that will meet the needs of all types of ... read more

What makes me a great tutor is my patience and understanding of a student in need. I believe all children are capable of success but sometimes may need a little extra help to get there. My teaching style is one of comparisons and analogies. Sometimes students just do not understand the mathematical terms. For this reason, I compare problems to something the student is familiar with, allow them to see the connection to the problem at hand and then guide them to solving the problem. This strategy has proven to be very successful and I've often had students tell me "You make it seem so easy!"
I have a bachelor degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, which has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of both sciences. I was also a Mathematics tutor at Florida A&M University for about two years. I tutored everything from grammar school mathematics up to Calculus II. I have al ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned a BS in Computer Science from Berry College with a minor in Animal Science and one class short of a second minor in English. During my senior year I worked as a teaching assistant, helping the freshman programming class complete their assignments as well as grading their work and running study sessions. I just finished a master's in computer science at Rice University (degree to be awarded December 2010) and during my time at Rice I was a TA both for their freshman class as well as for the advanced Operating Systems class. Before I graduated I spent summers teaching horseback riding to children. Currently, I am independently tutoring a sixth grader in math twice a week.
I have spent many years working with students of all ages, from my summer jobs running horse camps for children to my time in college as a teaching assistant for introductory classes. I am very optimi ... read more

At the beginning of my junior high year, I began to seriously wonder what I would do as an adult. My tenth grade year gave me the answer. I instantly loved Biology and because of a generous and wonderful teacher who was patient and explained all the things I could do in the Biology field, I knew this was my nitch. I went on the graduate with a degree in Biology, and minor in Chemistry, a Master's degree in Biology, and am currently working towards my Ph.D in Pathology and Immunology. I have done extensive research in Biology and have 10 years experience in Chemical laboratories. I am also very strong with computers and writing skills.
I believe the keys to teaching and tutoring are patience and encouragement. Everyone has their strong areas and their weak areas. However, I do believe that each student can get through any subject with the right methods. I believe that if one method ... read more
