I have a degree in Math and I am currently 3/4 complete for a Masters in Elem. Education w/Certif. I have been a substitute teacher for 2 years, w/1 long term sub teaching position of 3 mos at the elem level, and 1 long term sub position of 6 wks at the high school level in Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Geometry. I have 4 children who have all taken advanced Mathematics classes, with my occasional assistance. I spent almost 30 years writing and managing government technical proposals for the computer industry. I also spent time tutoring two children at the third and sixth grade levels. I find that many of the problems that students have with mathematics are not a result of an inability to understand the subject, but an inability to grasp the material as presented by the teacher, and a resulting disinterest. I like to spend the first couple of meetings with the student assessing how they learn best and giving them some tricks that lead to success in an area that has given them a lot of trouble. Through their success, we can build interest in the subject, and through understanding their learning patterns, we can present the material in a way that makes sense to them. The result of this method is that the subject becomes easier for the student to understand, and the applications make it more interesting to the student.
