I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style. I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on).
