Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.
I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.

Licensed Teacher. Highly qualified K-8.

Howard Gardner's teaching philosophy aligns with my teaching style. He believes there are multiple intelligences. Therefore, some students learn best with movement or art or hands-on activities and some are very logical and so on. As a teacher, I try to incorporate various intelligences into my lessons in order to meet a wide spectrum of educational needs. However, as a tutor, it is important for me to get to know the individual student in order to capitalize on his/her intellectual strengths and improve his/her weaknesses through using activities and methods which correspond.
My experience has taken me across grade levels as well as across the world. In college, I studied educational methods, theories and philosophies as well as human development. During this time, I participated in classroom practicums (aiding with individual/ small group instruction) and then eventually student ... read more

My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I also try to get students to think of problems as puzzles. I believe learning can be a fun experience as long as we never forget to ask the fundamental questions - "Why and How?"
While working on my PhD. I was a graduate teaching fellow for the Dept. of Ed. Teacher-Scholar program. I supervised undergraduates in organic chemistry labs, graded exams, led recitation sections and graded homework for both organic and general chemistry le ... read more

I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. Sometimes a positive and fun mentor is a great way to learn a difficult subject.

I have a passion for higher education and helping young men and women reach their academic goals. I facilitated several ethics courses at Gonzaga University and helped tutor fellow graduate students in research methods and statistical analysis at Oregon State University. My teaching style is focused on the individual student. I realize that not all students are receptive to the same teaching style, as a result I am a flexible teacher who is willing to change my approach if the student is not responding positively to my initial teaching techniques.

A Little Bit About Me...

I became a tutor at the request of a professor, and this work has led me to discover the joys of teaching. I love assisting students with reading and writing and helping them to find in themselves ability, confidence, and enthusiasm. I am passionate about working with students to find methods of studying that work for them, as well as helping their academic work by addressing other issues such as social pressures, learning disabilities, and lack of motivation. I am committed to giving my students a new-found sense of strength and self reliance, as well as being a mentor and friend.
Due to my love of reading and writing I have chosen to pursue a degree in the Classics at Whitman College. In 2007 I was asked by a professor to privately tutor another student in Latin. A Little Bit About Me...

Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. I have tutored elementary school children thru the S.M.A.R.T. program as well as through classroom assistance programs. I am currently working on completing my Associate of Science degree in English and expect to have my degree in June 2010. I have gained a lot of experience through my schooling in regard to my writing, grammar and reading comprehension abilities.
I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy the process of helping students to learn. It is a great experience to see their minds grasp a new concept or idea. I realize that each student is an individual and as such may have a different learning style than another. My goal is to facilitate that learning so they feel and are successful in conquering the lessons to be learned.
I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. I primarily worked with middle school-high school students. I tutored them both at home and at a computer lab on an internet program. That position was cut because of budget cuts. I spent two years teaching and tutoring Autistic children. I aided in routine skills, verbal skills and dealing with change. I have worked with two different children on these skills. I also have extensive skills in writing and researching for my research papers. I also have great knowledge of APA format and can write an essay in no time flat.
I love working with children. I have helped with pre-K and grade school children with an emphasis on working with Autistic children. All children can succeed in school given the right tools; just because they do not get the idea from one method does not mean that they won't get it from a different method. I think that all children can learn regardless of age, learning ability or other status, if given a chance.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that learning should be fun and effective. It is important to me that students enjoy the discovery and challenge of learning but that they also learn the discipline and perseverance that will help them continue to grow. I enjoy using many styles of learning and kid-friendly activities to help students understand and master material. I strive to make my students feel encouraged and challenged to do their personal best. I want them to help them have realistic expectations and give them the knowledge, tools and help they need to reach them. I want to give students confidence that will help them succeed.

Making school awesome for students is challenging, but it is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Before I begin teaching, I create several goals and strategies to make it clear what I expect and what direction we want to go. I emphasize that as long as they give it a 100% effort, they will do well. I use as many teaching tools as possible. I make the concepts as clear as possible, and I check for understanding before we move on. I make classes interesting by connecting the material to things they like. I also like to incorporate games. Finally, I like to maintain a sense of humor. This not only allows class to be enjoyable, but the students do better when they are relaxed. The combination of organization, making the material clear, using various methods, and making the classes fun is how I make teaching successful and enjoyable.

I have been an educator for over 10 years. Even as an undergrad, I was interested in working with children and spent my summers employed with the YMCA's youth programs. My experience is working with at-risk youth from kindergarten to high school seniors. My Master's degree in education combines coursework in special education and talented and gifted. I have tutored and taught students in all subjects both core curriculum and electives. My certification covers Kindergarten through Ninth grade.
I enjoy teaching. Working with a student one-to-one or even in small groups allows a student to have their individual needs met. Tutoring has the advantage of catching the student where they are struggling to comprehend. I am patient, creative, and prefer to model examples for my students. I believe that a strong foundation in the basics will help a student grasp more difficult concepts. ... read more

I teach in a collaboratively with students. I believe that treating students more as equals and less and repositories for teacher originated information, is more conducive to learning. I present students with the information and let them build their own understanding.
As part of my undergraduate degree I taught English to adults. I taught English in Korea for one year before enrolling in my Masters of Education program. During the program I had two student teacher placements. My first placement was in a middle school mathematics class and my second placement was in a self-contained 5th grade classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example, I often chose to teach language by acting out the word or phrase, or having a student act it out. However, there were some classes that were not responsive to this type of teaching and, as a result I resorted to what I had previously considered arcane and authoritarian: repetitious call and response, and by rote. These methods proved to be effective for certain classes. As a result, I am now open to any possible number of teaching methods.
