A Little Bit About Me...

I am always driven to do my very best. This has been indicated as I earned mostly A's in all subjects. I have worked in the business world in marketing and I know the value of education. I have a Masters Degree in Teaching. I am currently an EC teacher. I am shocked at the number of students who do not have the basic skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies but yet the school system continues to pass them to the next grade without these skills. During the past five years, I have worked as an EC resource teacher in both elementary and middle schools. I am licensed to teach K-12 EC.
I love working with children. I believe that all children can learn, but each child learns in a different way. In order to help a student, you must find out how they learn. You also must find their passion. With this information (passion and learning style), you can help any ... read more

Along with my bachelors I have obtained two minors as well, one chemistry and the other in sociology. Due to this background I was able to excel in teaching others the fundamentals of biology. Partaking in research, working on lab reports and spending numerous nights in the lab have benefited me in that I am well versed in all aspects of the life sciences.
In the beginning being a doctor was all that I desired. Helping others, tending to their wounds and etc was my dream. It wasn't until I had the honor of tutoring others that I realized, my passion to teach was equally as strong as my passion for medicine. I feel no child is incapable of learning. As long as one remembers that everyone is different, and that each ... read more

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.

More About This Tutor...

As an elementary school teacher and as a college instructor, I have strived to teach and reach my students by engaging the students in the process of learning. As a second grade teacher, the strategies I employed including assessing the strengths, weaknesses and interests of each student, forming small groups in order to maximize opportunities for individualized instruction, and emphasizing participatory instruction that engaged the students in active learning. I believe that many students respond when instructors treat them with respect and set high, clear and consistent expectations. I believe that the key to learning for many students is sparking an interest in the subject matter, and whenever possible relating the material to the student’s own life and experiences. An effective teacher must employ a variety of strategies in order to meet the specific needs of each student.

As a student, I was always committed to learning and to achieving my goals. As a teacher and tutor, I strive to help others share the same love for learning and for understanding as I do. Now, I help others set goals, and work toward achieving them. I have worked with all ages, all ability levels, and various sized groups and have enjoyed each and every experience. I have a passion for the subject matter that I teach, as did my most effective teachers in the past. It is important to care about what you are teaching and try to incorporate elements that the learner will find interesting. I want to motivate my students and envoke that same passion to utilize all of their learning tools. I am patient and understanding.
In the course of my experiences and education, I have demonstrated my motivation, energy, and passion for caring and helping in an educational setting. I spent a semester as a full time volunteer teacher in two Head Start classrooms; and tutored middle school students my senior year of college. Both of these experiences has taught me patience, understanding, and effective tutoring techniques. As a human development major, I feel attuned to the mental health issues and developmental needs that students face.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else.
I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My goal is to provide the best education possible and to suceed in that is to have great communication and alittle fun doing the work that is expected.
