More About This Tutor...

I am a graduate of UNC Greensboro with a BS in Exercise Sport and Science. I have also worked 3 years as an assistant teacher and a floater in a daycare. I helped kids with their homework in math, english and science afterschool, as well as helped teachers plan the weekly lesson plans during the summer programs.
Each child learns differently so I try to explain in ways they can understand. I listen to what and how they need help and try to relate that to helping them understand better. I try to get them to discover the answers on their answer and feel comfortable with explaining how they got the answer.

I began tutoring others in different academic subjects while at Forest Hills High School. During my time at Dartmouth College I assisted others--primarily with writing assistance. Majoring in Education & African-American Studies, I endeavored to help others take pride in learning. I helped implement the Academic Peer Advisory Council on campus. Upon graduating from Dartmouth I worked as a Substitute Teacher and After School Program Coordinator. These positions enabled me to provide both instruction and enrichment to students. I have since helped my own children and their peers—especially with basic math, reading, and writing.
My teaching style embraces a strength based approach. I start with what my students already know and build from there. I find that positive reinforcement of previously acquired skills encourages further learning. I also use creative everyday examples to help ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.
From my experiences teaching acting in Durham NC I know education can I know that learning can be fun. I hold a Bachelor's from UNC Greensboro where I majored in Psychology and theater arts, but also took many literature credits to fulfill a special educational program in which I was placed. this program was for gifted students. Through many research papers and oral presentation and extensive exams, I know that I am capable of assisting any student with their written and oral skills. I have tutored throughout school and into college. During college, I mentored and tutored two young girls from an under-privileged school for a local program. After college, I did some private consulting, helping people write admissions essays and prepare for the ACT and other standardized tests. I've also worked as a Google Answers Researcher and as a grants adviser to nonprofit foundations.
I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. When the comfort level is established we then develop a mutual-learning relationship, as I can learn from the student just as much as he or she can learn from me.

I have a lot of experience working with all ages of children. As a teacher, I try to maintain a respectful but friendly dialogue with the student. Especially as a tutor, I want to be able to have an open and honest dialogue with the kid about the work. I am happy always to talk about why certain work is included in the curriculum. If a child is struggling, I know that an initial response is to quit. To assert that certain work is worthless or of no meaning in their life. I would devote a lot of energy to challenging that assertion. By grounding the lessons of the day in the larger context of the world, I would lead the individual to a recognition of the intrinsic value of schoolwork.
I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill last Spring with a BA in Anthropology and a minor in both Creative Writing and Chinese. I graduated with a 3.99gpa and Highest Honors. I was selected to the Phi Beta Ka ... read more

I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My goal is to provide the best education possible and to suceed in that is to have great communication and alittle fun doing the work that is expected.
I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else.
