My teaching style embraces a strength based approach. I start with what my students already know and build from there. I find that positive reinforcement of previously acquired skills encourages further learning. I also use creative everyday examples to help students understand topics better. For example, to help a child enhance their reading and math skills I’ll use a cooking activity. They read the instructions, use the dictionary to look up words they do not understand, and help complete the recipe with measuring, timing, etc. My style allows students to enhance both their knowledge and self-esteem.

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.

From 1985 through 1987 I worked at a domestic violence shelter often working with the children of abused women to help them stay current in school. Most were elementary school age. I have a passion for the subject matter that I teach, as did my most effective teachers in the past. I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else.
I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My goal is to provide the best education possible and to suceed in that is to have great communication and alittle fun doing the work that is expected.
