I have taught mathematics in grades 3 through college. I especially enjoy working with high school students and college algebra and trigonometry students. Since my retirement from college teaching I have been tutoring at Sylvan Learning, teaching some grade school math, algebra, geometry and ACT prep. I especially enjoy working one-on-one with students because I am able to concentrate on his/her weaknesses. I like to use manipulatives and concrete examples whenever possible. After introducing a concept I work out examples with the student, then have him/her work through several examples while I watch and, finally, have the student work independently on a set of problems. If there are still errors I try to approach the concept from a different perspective and then repeat the process.

I am an author of many books. I have published a book for the trade market (in bookstores) as well as many books for the education market. Among the books I have written is a book for teachers about teaching writing to the high school student. I have more than 30 years experience in helping students be better writers. Additionally I have been a bylined columnist for a local paper and have been published in many newspapers across the country. I know how to help students be successful. I am committed to helping students achieve mastery of the writing process. Using direct instruction and excellent examples, I take students step-by-step towards building better sentences, paragraphs, and essays. I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science. I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.

As a graduate student at the University of Maryland, I taught Russian 101 to undergraduate students for two semesters. I also taught Russian 101 at the University of Virginia for two semesters as a teacher’s assistant. I taught English as a Second Language through Black Hawk College for two semesters, and I taught infants and toddlers at Best Beginnings preschool and child care center for 2 years and 5 months. I have earned a bachelor's degree in Russian Language and Literature, a master's degree in Russian Linguistics, a second master's degree in Russian Language and Literature, a certificate in Arabic Language, and an associate's degree in Elementary Education. I have experience teaching many different age groups, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, learning styles, etc. I know what it takes to learn, because I have done it before, and I take what I have learned and apply it to teaching.
