I have always enjoyed working with children of all ages. I taught dance for my high school years to younger children and I believe that has taught me a lot about teaching styles. I understand that not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. Students all have different styles of learning just as teachers have their different styles of teaching. I work well with children of all ages and am considerably patient, easygoing, although stern as well with my students. My teaching style consists of visual illustrations mixed with a lecture or teaching session. Through my experiences at USD I have determined that the amalgamation of these two styles produce more stimulating teachings as well as information retention being maximized as well. I have been teaching for the last fifteen years. I started my teaching career in the junior high grades and then decided that my preference would be with the younger children. I have taught both second and third grade and throughly loved both levels. I have attended various classes and workshops relating to helping children learn to read and love doing it. I have taken the South Dakota Reading Curriculum both at the second and third grade levels. I have tutored children and for four years ran the summer reading program for the Beresford area children. I have become very familiar with the differentiated instruction model of teaching students. When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I try to find a way to explain things so the material is more interesting and less frustrating than it is when the teacher explains it.
