I start out with discussing the area of weakness with the student and then try to investigate why this might be the area of weakness. Once this is discovered, I teach the student (through examples) until they understand the topic with which they need help. Then, I observe how they perform without my guidance and see if they have learned to complete problems solo.
Most of my experience is informal with tutoring family members/church members/friends in whatever areas they were struggling. My comments on tutoring Spanish : I have taken 2 years of college Spanish. I have been implementing Spanish into my classroom curriculum for over 10 years. My translation ability is better than my speaking. I have passed many Spanish proficiency tests. I am comfortable helping at an elementary or beginning level.

Learning never ceases; so, why should you?

My teaching style is a mixture of strict and lenient. I try to form a connection with students and apply that to my teaching method (i.e. incorporating a similar hobby in a question in order for the student to understand the material better). I expect my students to give me and the other students respect- never speaking while others are speaking, no disruptions, ect. This method of teaching has shown effective and a fun learning environment. I base my curriculum around the importance of reading. Reading is the easiest and most effective way of obtaining knowledge and using it in the world.

Spanish is one of my top subjects! At 16 I decided I needed to see the world so I moved to Argentina as an exchange student. I spent a year learning both the culture and language of the country. I was able to travel a lot and really felt like a member of their society. I have a bachelors degree in Spanish and I also spent a second 6 months in Costa Rica and an additional month in Peru.

I believe that a lack of success in academic's is usually attributed to one of two things; a lack of motivation(it's not fun enough) or a misunderstanding of the fundamentals(which brings a feeling of hopelessness). This is particularly true in foreign languages. Many times a person must rewire their brain when it comes to learning a new language. My goal in tutoring is to help students not just fix a problem but create an overall understanding of what they are learning. I also like to focus on making goals and increasing motivation to learn.
