After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, I freelanced food styled with recipe development for clients such as Sonic, Waffle House, Omaha Steaks, Yarnell's Icecream, and Harry and David catalogs. I have been published in Southern Living Magazine and Home Mechanix Magazine, as well as food/restaurand flyers and catalogs. An education is not just gained through books; every life experience is capable of teaching a child. Math can be taught through books, games or even by counting the number of sprinkles on their sundae. Science can be taught by explaining why the cloud is in the sky and why it is raining. I have learned that I enjoy teaching when it is in a more personal setting whether one on one or small class. That is why I enjoyed post secondary classes the most. For me one of the most important aspects of teaching is the ability to build relationships with the students. My teaching style is very simple, but is one that took a long time to learn. In college you are taught everything but HOW to teach. I learned the HOW by watching my teachers and having some very good mentors. I began to ask myself, " why do I learn more from this instructor than that instructor?" No matter what the subject is, you have to learn 2 things to reach the student. One, how does this student learn. Two, you can't force the information. I feel that a student learns more and shows more excitement when they are allowed to find answers on their own. This also takes building a relationship with the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of a private college, I have always been driven to perform at the top of my game. I have received two Bachelors degrees in both English literature and theater. Early in my collegiate career I gained a position as a teaching assistant (TA) and taught a required first year course for 3 out of my 4 years of college. In this position, I noticed that a lot of writing skills were missing from first year students that I felt that they should hav possessed and created and implemented a collegiate level writing and researching workshop that the college still uses.
