I was taught to teach by "Socratic Method" which is possibly the best way to teach/tutor. I ask many questions to check the students responsiveness and understanding of key areas of the topics including a reinforcing of the ideas being learned. I cannot count how many students I have had come in frustrated and confused and then quickly answer questions that were simple and built up to understanding harder ideas by the end of a session. And the best award of all is seeing joy and elation that they have a good chance of getting a high grade after learning material. "Socratic Method" is the best proof a tutor can see that a student is learning and has learned what they have been taught.

A Little Bit About Me...

My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abstract Algebra, Differential equations, and topology. I was especially interested in algebraically-capable computer math programs. I,eventually, went back to school for my Mathematics degree as part of a long-standing interest in and commitment to Mathematics. I presently teach students who are "at risk" in the 7th through 12th grades and have done so for the last 10-11 years at OHM-BOCES. Tutoring is one of my best skills, its just something I do well. I’ve tutored k-12 for Amsterdam, Gloversville and Johnstown in almost any subject, I have a strong math background particularly in algebra. I believe that each student has a unique way of learning and I try to adapt my teaching to the class. My philosophy is that what we learn in class has to be reinforced with the homework. I review the homework each day. When the homework is reviewed there is a clear understanding that if there is an area the student is struggling with we don't move on until the concept in understood. You cannot build on the foundation if there are blocks missing. If one individual does not understand then I wait for that individual after class and we set up a time to review the problem.
