I generally take a learner-centered approach to teaching. Rather than lecture, I coach or guide students on developing and applying skills and knowledge. I believe effective learning can occur in a 1-on-1 tutoring situation when the tutor and the student can communicate well. Tone, mood, and setting all come into play. A tutor who is relaxed, cheerful, encouraging, and resolutely intelligent is more likely to be approachable and someone the student will collaborate with successfully. I believe in active listening and working together to establish a method of studying.
I took high school and college seriously. After college I worked for several years before attending law school. After law school I decided to combine my legal experience with hands-on medical skills, and I enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at SUNY Delhi, which I will complete next May. All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.

A Little Bit About Me...

Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.
