20+ Years Experience, Hundreds of Five-Star Ratings

I engage with a new student for a relationship. I inquire regarding their expectations, concerns, fears, and hopes for tutoring. I then explain my tutoring philosophy. Then, I ask for a diagnosis of how well they are performing the course material subject, and how I can help them best in the first session.

Remote Tutoring in Physics, Math, & More

My approach to both physics and math is very concept oriented. I try to combat the 'shut up and calculate' approach that students often encounter in their schooling. Rather than expecting my students to quickly memorize and regurgitate information they barely understand, I expect students to actively engage with the material and to develop their own unique approach to problem solving. This means I am not the right tutor for students wanting me to just do their homework for them or cover a huge amount of material quickly. Sometimes understanding takes time, but I firmly believe that developing a problem-solving strategy is more valuable long term than simply getting the 'right' answer to a specific problem.
I have been teaching in one capacity or another for most of my life. In recent years, my focus has been private tutoring in physics and mathematics, but I have taught stu ... read more

My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

I strongly believe that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, is capable of learning any level of science and mathematics. The key to teaching science and mathematics is to focus on the student's individual strengths and learning style. I am good at approaching a subject from different angles to find one that is most effective for each student. I have a great deal of patience, a positive, easy-going attitude, and a genuine enthusiasm for science and math that is always evident in my teaching. I am passionate about helping people learn and I am ready to work with each student's individual needs to deliver the best educational experience possible.

I teach with passion and enjoyment, which has always proved conducive to the learning process. I, myself, have always enjoyed being a student, and realized what qualities in teachers I found most effective. Patience, competency, articulation and good-natured humor go a very long way in education and I believe I possess those traits. I have worked with mainstream students, Special Education students, and Deaf students in a variety of educator roles from straight tutoring to camp counseling. Through these experiences, I have realized that a teacher must have flexibility and creativity in how they present information, as everyone has a different learning style. The responsibility lies with the educator to find that style and help the student reach his/her highest potential, and I feel confident in my ability to do so.
In all my endeavors I strive for variety. My collegiate caree ... read more

I've recently tutored math and general science for UpwardBound, a program designed to inspire and give the tools necessary to under-privileged high school students to become first generation college students. Throughout my study of math and physics, I've found that most people that are unable to do these subjects are limited by their own phobias and that if they are simply explained in the right way anyone can feel comfortable with frightening subjects such as math and physics.
In teaching math and physics I find that most student's heads start to spin when looking at numbers, so I do my best to use analogies to describe a mathematical process, then once a student feels comfortable with the analogy they can apply this analogy to solve problems with numbers. Again stemming from overcoming phobias of math or physics being the most important step in learning, I try to make the complic ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

An effective tutor is one who is able to help the student identify their strengths and weakness and then work with the student to increase their understanding, thereby reinforcing their strong points and building strength on weak points. In order to accomplish this, I maintain a very relaxed, comfortable tutoring area so that the student feels completely comfortable discussing their academic strengths and weaknesses. With this trust established, I drive my tutor sessions with questions enabling the student to tell me what they know (or don't know) so that I'm not the one talking the whole time. It is a teacher's job to lecture; it is a tutor's job to build understanding. This understanding is developed through question answering and discussion between the student and the tutor.
I have worked as a tutor throughout my undergraduate career and also for a part of my high school career ... read more

One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. My goal as a teacher is to make sure that my students have received a full understanding of and confidence in the material.
I recently graduated from Connecticut College with a BA in Mathematics, with minors ... read more

I love the interaction between a teacher and their students. For me teaching is a form of self discovery. My students are like mirrors in which I see my strengths and weaknesses. As a rising junior at Cornell University, I was asked to TA a Chemistry course for engineers. I accepted and entered into my first teaching position. Immediately, I knew teaching was right for me. Helping explain a complicated topic in a simple way and watch students get it is an amazing experience. I quickly signed up to TA 3 more courses next semester (Bio,Chem,CS). After graduation I continued teaching at KAAPrep. There I taught 1on1 and group lectures on math and science subjects and standardized tests like SAT2's and AP's. Lastly, I taught Organic Chemistry at the Weill medical school in the Middle East. I was born and lived in Russia until I was 11, so I am fluent in the language.
I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this ... read more

I have an extensive math and science-backed education, including two BS degrees and an MS as well. Not only have I excelled my entire academic career, but I am a great communicator and teacher. I have taught everything from Physics to undergrad students to English as a Second Language to students in Korea. I have lectured in front of 100 undergrad students as well as tutored one at a time. I have tutored for most of my adult life, covering math, science, physics, engineering, English, and even computer training.
As both a teacher and a tutor, I have found several things to be important to a successful educator. First is engagement. I find it necessary to engage the student and involve them in the lesson. I've found that even something as simple as using props to illustrate a point helps the student understand the material better, but also be more interested in learning. Sec ... read more
