I am a question-answer type of teacher. I like to demonstrate, have them do, answer questions, clear up ambiguities, and then test or at least check to insure learning and understanding. I have a style of quiet, but firm expectations. I have a great amount of patience. I will do best with high school and college age students, and on occasion, with more mature middle school students.
I have been an "instructor"-teacher for over 15 years. I teach math, economics, finance, business, and management for several colleges. I have been a Boy Scoutmaster and merit bade counselor and have worked with youth for over 15 years. I have always been given very high marks as an instructor with many comments on my positive energy and help for students. I have an applied mathematics minor so I would be able to teach algebra, geometry, trig, and introductory calculus.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Math classes included Calculus I, II, and III, Differential Equations and Matrices, and Engineering Math. My MS in Engineering Management included several classes in Statistics and Probabilities. I tutored middle school students 12 hours per week for two years at Ramstein Middle School, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
I believe that each student is different, and that the best teaching method differs with each student. Some students respond better to being challenged while others will require smaller steps. The goals of the students also vary, some needing only to pass while others need a solid foundation in anticipation of further study. I believe I can tailor instruction to the students' needs.

My style is patient, respectful, fair and adaptive. The goal is to find what works well for the student, not take a rigid one-size-fits-all approach that a classroom may employ. I start looking right away for “What is missing?” I have seen many students who are perfectly capable but struggle because they missed a fundamental building block. Learning is always difficult. This is normal and I make sure students remember that. There is a balance to be struck where the student is pushing hard enough to improve but not so hard that they withdraw from the learning process.
I began as an English major then graduated in Physics with honors, cutting edge research experience in both academia and industry, as a published writer, photojournalist and poet. As a result, I can understand why some very intelligent people who perform well with the arts can sometimes be frustrated by the math and sc ... read more

I wanted very much to teach at the Liberal Arts College level but was unable to secure a full-time, permanent position. In pursuit of this goal, I have completed an MS in Physics, all the coursework necessary for a MS in Mathematics, an MA in Philosophy, and I am working to complete my PhD in philosophy. Over the last 10 years I have taught at every level from high school to university, and have frequently tutored students at all of these levels.
I have never taught a subject, physics, mathematics or philosophy, at a level that was beyond the abilities of any student who really wanted to master the material, and I don't think I'd be interested at teaching at that level. Many students are not able to master these subjects in school, but quite often it is not due to a lack of desire on their part, but instead a lack of sufficient preparation due most often to poor prior instructi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

A recent graduate of Brown University, I am well accustomed to pursuing education excellence. In my time at Brown, I earned a 3.96 overall GPA and a 4.0 GPA in my area of study. My diverse coursework allowed me to learn material in many subject areas, as well as develop strong study and organizational skills, time management ability, and exceptional work ethic. My researching skills were employed on a daily basis in my studies, as well as my ability to capture those facts in concise and comprehensive writing. In high school, I tutored student at an hourly rate and in college volunteered to tutor inner-city children. Further, I spent countless hours over the past 8 years with fellow student, tutoring them and aiding in their academic success.
My philosophy of tutoring is rather simple - every individual has unique needs that should be met by a tutor in the most patient, sensitive, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated Cum Laude from University of Rochester with a BS in Physics and a BA in Mathematics. While an undergraduate at UR, I earned five semesters of teaching experience through the Teaching Internship program with the Physics Department. As a teaching intern I learned to master various teaching techniques, and I implemented them by leading workshops and laboratory sessions for undergraduate students. I also worked as a math Teaching Assistant for a Transition To Advanced Mathematics course where I held office hours and led class discussions. As a result of my success and high ratings as a teaching intern, I was most recently employed as a non-matriculated Teaching Assistant for a physics course at Texas A&M University.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. My goal as a teacher is to make sure that my students have received a full understanding of and confidence in the material.

In teaching math and physics I find that most student's heads start to spin when looking at numbers, so I do my best to use analogies to describe a mathematical process, then once a student feels comfortable with the analogy they can apply this analogy to solve problems with numbers. Again stemming from overcoming phobias of math or physics being the most important step in learning, I try to make the complicated and confusing territory of math and physics easily navigable by bringing problems to a tangible ground for students.
I've recently tutored math and general science for UpwardBound, a program designed to inspire and give the tools necessary to under-privileged high school students to become first generation college students. Throughout my study of math and physics, I've found that most people that are unable to do these subjects are limited by their own phobias and that if t ... read more

I love the interaction between a teacher and their students. For me teaching is a form of self discovery. My students are like mirrors in which I see my strengths and weaknesses. I teach with passion and enjoyment, which has always proved conducive to the learning process. I, myself, have always enjoyed being a student, and realized what qualities in teachers I found most effective. Patience, competency, articulation and good-natured humor go a very long way in education and I believe I possess those traits. I have worked with mainstream students, Special Education students, and Deaf students in a variety of educator roles from straight tutoring to camp counseling. Through these experiences, I have realized that a teacher must have flexibility and creativity in how they present information, as everyone has a different learning style. The responsibility lies with the educator to find that style and help the student reach his/her highest potential, and I feel confident in my ability to do so.
In all my endeavors I strive for variety. My collegiate caree ... read more

I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things.

An effective tutor is one who is able to help the student identify their strengths and weakness and then work with the student to increase their understanding, thereby reinforcing their strong points and building strength on weak points. In order to accomplish this, I maintain a very relaxed, comfortable tutoring area so that the student feels completely comfortable discussing their academic strengths and weaknesses. With this trust established, I drive my tutor sessions with questions enabling the student to tell me what they know (or don't know) so that I'm not the one talking the whole time. It is a teacher's job to lecture; it is a tutor's job to build understanding. This understanding is developed through question answering and discussion between the student and the tutor.
